    Unhappy Oooh my Diff woes

Was told to day by a bloke where I work that the rear diff was leaking as I left work the the day before. So I had a look. Well the rear diff has a welded section on the rear of the diff housing. So in the past the diff had failed. So I look under the rear and see a hole were the weld is. Luckily at work we use a type of plastic putty filler. So went and got some. On closer inspection I noticed that the hole was actually a piece pushed out. Not a good sign, but the diff was not making any noise or vibrations. So tapped the metal back in place and applied the putty. Whilst it was drying I topped up the diff with some oil I had.(Oil a must have item when owning a land rover.Never leave home with out some ). So got home and drained the oil from the diff. At this point I realised what the problem was. The spider gears cross shaft had broken. Removal of the diff followed. Damage is a broken shaft, flogged out hole where the shaft mounted and chipped teeth. So now looking for new diff.

lucky you caught it in time before it tore open your casing like a can opener, that is what happened to mine when the cross shaft snapped, the gears got churned around by the ring gear, quite a mess!

JazzaDI I`m guessing now this is what has happened before to the rear diff as the scar is the same as in your picture. Will have to weld up the casing as the axle has been modified to take a different suspension set up.
RR46 PM has been sent and thanks for the offer.

thats a pain mate, i broke mine off road and luckily the gears didnt punch all the way through but they put a nice little dent on the inside of the housing as they tried to escape.

A perfect excuse for an air locker mate

This was the second time I broke mine.
Maxi drive was fitted after that.
I have a spare 10 Spline Rangy diff in good nick.
You can have it for free if you want to organise the freight or want to pick it up.
