Never thought of the Philippines as a family destination, the people I know who go there don't go there for the Jeepneys.

I have spent a fair bit of time there a few years ago in my work. I took the opportunity to tour around a bit, and it is still one of my favourite places.
Lovely people and some great beaches and islands. Best of all, almost everyone speaks pretty good English. ( albeit with a wierd spanish/American accent ).
You'll hear about the girly bars and mail order brides etc, but that aspect is no worse than Thailand and a few other places. You won't see it unless you deliberately go looking for it. Contrary to popular belief, not everyone goes there for that.
There's also the current insurgency issue of course, but that shouldn't be a problem if you stay away from the southern island of Mindanao - check the Australian government travellers warning site.
You'll see the Jeepneys as soon as you hit Manila. Take a ride in one - you'l l never forget it ! Just hop in and pay acouple of pesos - get off when you like.
Go to Boracay, which is probably the most famous ( and touristy ) of the islands. Then maybe Cebu and White Beach on Bohol or El Nido. The choice is really unlimited.
You'll be treated warmly and the kids will be adored, especially if they have red or blonde hair, however, as is any other country, just be wary and use common sense.
I'd go back for a holiday anytime.

Thanks mate, el-nido and boracay are the top of the list... don't nknow if the kids will be up to the travel involved with getting to el nido though?.
Never been there (yet) but from what i've read about it, it surprises me about (everyones) the lack of knowledge and the lack tourism with the whole area. Go to parts of Indo and there's just as much trouble, we just don't hear about it.
It's funny though, mention going to thailand and all is cool - but mention going to the philippines and the first thing most people associate with is the sleezy side
. It's probably 10 x worse in Thailand...
