    Oil pressure problem V8?

HI, I picked up a V8 disco 2(190ks on the clock) relatively cheap a few weeks ago I am now starting to find out why it was "priced to sell" Anyway I was starting to make some progress in getting this beast back on the road. I gave it an oil and oil filter change and took it for a short spin, about 2ks down the road a slight lifter noise could be heard, it got louder and the oil pressure light came on.. i shut it down before hopefully before some real damage was done. having only driven it 5ks before this when I brought it I have no idea if it has a blockage from when I changed the oil, oil pumps stuffed or something worse any ideas out there??
    Thanks

Does it have the camshaft or crankshaft driven oil pump?

If the former, there is an oil pressure relief valve within the oil pump front cover which has been known to stick in the open position. This will then see a drop in oil pressure and very little in the way of oil circulating around the engine.

Hi, thanks Ron, I will have to check out which oil pump drive I have(new to LRs) Hope that's all it is, and its not to much of a mission to fix. LR is still down the road, contemplating on putting a half litre more oil(over fill) in it to get it home!
    Thanks

    Hello Dan,

It is a 4.0 litre, then it has a crankshaft driven oil pump. I have not had one of these apart so I cannot say if this could be the same problem, although it may well be likely.

I am sure that another member who has will pop by and give some help to you too.

    Are both filters the same
If it didn't do it before you changed the oil chances are its something you have done

    Is the oil to thick
    Is it the right filter

I brought the new oil filter from supercheap so to check it was right I went to '4 wheel drives' in Blackburn and got the same one there to. Both new oil filters are the same diameter but a lot shorter than the original. Was reading a post about filling the filter with oil before installing? Engine was starting to get death rattle before i shut it down..

What is the number on the filter (Z89A), you may have put the wrong filter on, Regards Frank.

    G'day stdango

It is usually wise to 3/4 fill a new filter with oil before spinning it on, as it helps to stop the chance of an airlock and no oil pressure, which sounds like what yours has.does your oil light go off, was your oil light working OK before the oil change ??

    cheers

Hi, yea oil filter is Z89A. I cautiously started it to get it home, it rattled and slowly became quiet after about a min. Was only a short trip home so it didn't have time to warm up. Going to pull off filter and drain oil. And try filling filter first. Noticed under the oil fill cap, it looked that dodgy creamy brown colour.. would a head gasket cause oil pressure drop? Hadn't had a chance for a decent long drive before i changed the oil. I did buy it 'as is', not much info from previous owner other than he had head gaskets done, when i don't know. Was losing oil pressure when light came on.. could hear it starving for oil big time!

    Thanks

Oh...now this is not good. Best case is head gasket, worst case and sadly more likely is a crack in the block casing behind one of the liners. If this is the case, the engine will need to come out and have top hat liners fitted, then a complete rebuilt. It won't be cheap, but you will then have a very reliable engine that won't suffer from this type of problem ever again.

    Are you in Sydney?

    Ron.
