there are lots of interesting route variations from Bathurst to Gundagai

then get maps off NPWS in Tumut or the info centre in Tumbarumba ...

Tumbarumba has an interesting museum with a fair bit of Southern Cloud information and relics

follow the Tumba - Tooma - Khancoban Rd and take a break at the Southern Cloud lookout

the grave of Jack Riley (the man from Snowy R) is in Corryong

after Khancoban there are off road through tracks branching off the Alpine Way to the southwest around Scammels that go to Geehi via Major Clew's hut etc and after Geehi once you get to Tom Groggin you can ford the Murray River into VIC if you follow the track to the south past the end of the cleared area

Thank you! That's exactly what I am looking for. I would hate to get back home & realize that I had driven past all of that sort of thing. Do you recon there will be snow at this time of year (end of September)?

yep, there certainly will be snow

the Khancoban to Cabramurra rd will be closed

- probably not a problem for driving in the Khancoban - Tom Groggin area

but for Tom Groggin to Thredbo - it can be a problem .....

NPWS or servo in Khancoban will be able to advise and you'll be able to rent chains in the event that they are required

if you look at past years' records on

you'll see that Sep snow depth is often at a peak for the year

I should have checked that out earlier! I thought that it the snow season would be all but finished by then. The kids should have a great time.
Does Tom Groggin to Thredbo get closed often or are chains enough to get you through?
Do you have to return the chains back to where you got them from? Cause I was going to come back through Canberra.

to make sure, why not ring servo in Khancoban and NPWS at Jindabyne ?

there is some RTA or NPWS provision for not requiring chains to be carried if you have a 4X4 but personally I wouldn't rely on that

If you have not already planned to do so I would suggest travelling from Tamworth down via Currabubula, Spring Ridge, Colly Blue, Premer, Coolah, Dunedoo and south to Mudgee that way. Coolah Tops NP is also a very good spot to camp and can be accessed from the Premer side of the Liverpool range via Cunningham's Gap.
This is a much nicer drive as well as being shorter than the highway via Gunnedah.

When you get to Bathurst from Hill End go south to the snowys via Goulburn, this will take you through Tuena and Trunkey Ck, both interesting Gold Mining centres, Abercrombie caves is also worth a 4hr stop to go through the caves.

I think you mean Pandoras Pass/Cunninghams Camp .
