Not necessarily. If you had the camera set almost like the "black box" recorder from a plane, with the police/relevant department of transport able to stop the driver and review the footage at any time, then it's possible that even real idiots may attempt to comply with the rules and courtesies of the road.
Let's says that this was made available for P-platers, or those drivers convicted of a serious motoring offence. It's all about carrot and stick, Install one of these systems (provided FOC by the CPT or fully comp insurance provider) and your insurance premium will be affordable without selling your kidneys, but if you're caught doing something you shouldn't, then heavy loss of license penalties apply (maybe 5 or 10 years).

It won't catch those who want to driver without a license, registration, or are just complete mongrels, but nothing will work for them short of hanging.

It has taken a few days but I have eventually received a reply from our Minister for Road Safety.
They have acknowledged receipt of my request for exemption of non high performance petrol V8's (ie1 V8's). It is being "considered" (I am not holding my breath).
Now if I win cross lotto tonight I can go and buy a TDV8 Rangie that goes twice as quick as my D1 and will be legal for my daughter to drive!

    Question

Just an update on my pursuit of exemption for V8 petrol Land Rovers.

I have been bush a fair bit lately but between trips I have received some more correspondence from our Minister for Road Safety.

1st I received a "standard letter" of acknowledgement.
2nd I received a "standard letter" explaining the existing rules to me.

To this end I rang the ministers office to explain that even in my letter I acknowledged what the rules are and that I was requesting that certain low power V8 vehicles should also be exempted, not to have the rules explained to me.
The gentleman in the ministers office to whom I was speaking agreed that my original letter had not been answered and that I had put forward a valid argument for exemption.

I then put forward a further letter explaining my original request and that I did not require further letters explaining the rules to me.

3rd I received another "standard letter" of acknowledgement.
It has now been another month plus without reply...........
Now does this mean they are actually reading my original request?

I have not received a letter yet stating that my request will not be considered so perhaps there is still hope?

Has anyone else made requests for exemption or am I just "****ing into the wind"?

I fully support you on this one mate, The fact that you can go out and drive a new 6cly commodore, falcon or 200 plus Kw Toyota Aurion, which you could do alot more damage in than a V8 disco which has less power and more weight to push along. As mentioned by others it should be based on power to weight.

I have been negotiating for some time the purchase of a certain car in the USA. This is now not likely to occur as I have so far been unable to get a Vehicle Import Approval, being unable to provide satisfactory proof of age. This car could be driven by a "P" driver. It is a four cylinder two seat sports car. It has around 350 horsepower and weighs less than a ton. Yet a two ton turbo-diesel 4WD is not considered suitable for a "P" driver.

thats what makes it so stupid, there is absolutely no logic in the laws. It only goes to show that a person who has absolutely no knowledge of cars created the law and even dumber people voted to have it introduced.

I believe the politicians are teen bashing because they are an easy target. Most don't vote and they have little political power so the pollies can score points in the sensationialist media.

    The only answer is conscription!

the way it works in pommy land is quite good.

you can take your test any time from your 17th birthday onwards, and once you have passed you hold a full licence (no p plates) only difference is that for the first two years you can only get up to 6 penalty points before you lose your licence, after that it is 12 points. most offences eg. speeding, jump a red light etc are 3 points.

the thing that stops young drivers from getting too powerful cars is insurance. insurance is compulsary in the UK, a minimum of 3rd party.

any fast cars and you wont get insured, or if you can then you will be paying through the roof. eg my sisters boyfriend got a 2002 model bmw m3 when he was 20 (dont ask me where he got the money) and was paying over 3000 pounds insurance. but for most people that wouldnt be do able.

Having said that, we still have our fair share of teen fatalities/crashes, so maybe its not such a good system!

one of the students I used to teach got a job in the mines in Lithgow. Within a month he went out and got finance for a second hand $40000 F6 Typhoon. First thing I asked him was how much is insurance. $400 a month on pay by the month

I nearly bought a VS HSV Manta when i finished UNI, was only $20000 at the time but insurance was well over $2000 a year so i kept my VP executive.
