Called in there many years ago on a trawler (surprisingly named the "Karumba Gulf"). Was only a very small and isolated little place in those days, largely dedicated to the fishing (prawn) industry, but has probably changed a lot since then, especially with the increase in mining activity up that way.
Closest I have been by road since then (if you can call them roads) is Normanton & Gregory - it's not unusual for the road into Karumba to be closed for a while.
Maybe try a PM to Ean Austral if he's around. He runs a trawler out of Darwin, but not sure if he gets down that far or not.
Cheers .........

Used to visit there a bit when I lived at the Isa, but that was nearly 30 years ago. Great place especially if you like fishing and the slow pace, but it probably has changed a bit since then. Bitumen road all the way these days.Google it on the internet and see what comes up!

All the grey nomads head there for the dry season, I have a mate that goes up for 6 weeks a year for the fishing and they book their site 12 months in advance. They tell me the only time you can get any tradies is that time of the year because4 the semi retired nomads do a few days work between fishing
cheers

Thanks been looking on the net about it, looks like the kind of place you could catch a Barra or two and the swimming up that way looks like it could be exciting. With daily flights in and cafes etc can't be that bad
Lived there from '89 to 93. It was a great place, at that time anyway.
Very much a fishing/party kind of place but very friendly & has/had a real community feel. A very casual kind of place but you do need to keep a good pair of thongs in the cupboard for going out.
A lot of socialising was done.
My wife & I loved it (as did our then "Tweenie" daughter), only left because the job came to an end.
Except passing through on planes I have not been there for some years & I understand it has even more tourist these days. I would expect it would still be a good place to live. The Wet was always great with hardly anybody in town it was like a small continuous party went on all wet season.

I am not a fishing type person, so have never been there, but my son, son in law and 2 other brother in laws do the trip every year for a week. They were last there over Easter and got stuck for 3 weeks with road closures so keep an eye on the weather
