Hey mate,
I recently picked up a 97 disco tdi auto for 5k, and 230k's on it, apart from some rust it's in good nick. Make sure you check under the front carpet for rust.
I sold my GU Patrol for $27,500 and don't think I down graded at all.
The minister for war and finance has given the nod to looking for a 7 seat Disco.
My budget is about 5k and am looking at V8 petrol cars around the 200,000 kms mark.
Does the auto perform the same as a manual off road?
Is this a realistic expectation and are there any things to look at for at this number of kays?
Is newer better?
I would prefer less gadgets, for maintenance reasons, not sure about reliabilty (insert Prince of Darkness joke here).
I could probably fix most things except rust by myself.
Does a standard Disco go better off road than a Paj, Cruiser or Patrol. Would I get away without winching out all the time in a Disco, rather than the others?
What mods would be good for a beginner off road?
I'll be using it as daily, about 200ks per week.
James

Hi
For that money you should be able to pick up a decent V8.
The 7 seat models do fetch a bit more but are out there, I sold my SE7 for $5k, it had gas on it which I did and low km's. A couple of niggles like cruise not working and window switches playing up.
All in all a great car. Auto can be better of road in some situations like sand driving and the like. Manual is more economical.
Watch out for V8 with no gas, they suck juice (20L/100 average).
May I suggest to look for one with leather, I gather you need a 7 seater for kids, leather is so easy to maintain. If car has sunroof or even 2 of the buggers, look for leaks and that they work. They often leak.
Check service history and above all, drive several and have good Land rover mechanic check it out.
Good luck mate.![]()
Im going from a carby 253 auto Commodore so sucking fuel isnt that much of an issue, it comes down to how you drive and where.
Ive read the post about Disco rust in the front pans and will definitely be looking there.
Thanks for the reply.
The cheque from NRMA is in the mail, so will have at least 2K to spend, just need to find something now.
Good luck mate, hope you can nail a good one, sounds like a D1 with that sort of budget. There is a car yard at Edgeworth with a couple of Disco, V8's for sale but the cheapest one is nearly 8 grand and its only a 5 seater. they also have a D3, a couple of Freelander 1's and a couple of older model Rangies.I know this doesn't help but if you want to just have a look here is a link!
