Met a German tourist a couple of weeks ago at Billiluna , the settlement at the North end of the Canning Stock Route, who was trying to hitch hike her way South. When told that this was not a terribly good idea replied that she'd hitch hiked down the Tanami Road last year to Alice Springs so it shouldn't be a problem.
This stupid woman was 40ish, well educated and spoke better English than me and would not be swayed from her path. She wanted to know which wells had good water and had purification tablets for those that didn't. Her plan was to hitch hike from well to well and if she got into trouble she could email or SMS friends or in an emergency activate her personal EPIRB and calmly await aid. I kid you not. She may have been intelligent and well educated but had absolutely no brains at all.

Guess What ,She did it, we met her at about well 8 and she had gotten a lift with a bloke driving a 2 wheel drive europeon car of some sort.

They seemed to make a good pair, the only reason he seemed to have gotten as far as he did was he was being helped by a D1 and a 60 series..

I think another bloke we met at Durba springs on the canning may qualify as a contender..He had a Pajero with busted rear springs, and had been waiting 5 days for his mates to return from Newman with some new one's and some new shocks...
1 of the guys travelling with us offered the use of his spring compressers, so this Clown comes over with a Old man emu shockie, that was 5 years old and wouldnt have been working for the last 2 years atleast, and tells us how ****ed off he was that his suspension didnt last any longer and that Australian made parts were ****...he expected far more life out of it than he got.

The worse part was he was travelling with kids in the car..

    Cheers Ean

I met a fellow in a older triton on the easten end of the gunbarrel with a busted main leaf trvel with 3 other vehicles and instead of doing a temp repair and heading back about 20km to civalization and had order parts to Wiluna and was continuing on. Often wondered how he got on.
    cheers
