Also remember the accelerator action is not linear - to stop the revs on the motor bouncing around on rough tracks caused by the foot bouncing around on the accelerator, accelerator action is reduced at lower settings and increases when the foot it depressed. Being a little heavier on the foot does bring a bit more response from the engine. The applies to the V8s of the period.
