The use of upper cylinder lubricant has nothing to do with E10 - it is to do with the lack of lead in fuel so everyone with engines that do not have hardened valve seats etc should have been using upper cylinder head lubricant since leaded petrol was phased out. You need it with all petrol fuels currently available.

Thanks everybody for your input, I have done a search on the Forum and there is no clear answer.Yet NRMA clearly state on page 20 of the July/August edition of "Open Road" that E10 has a RON of 93-94. I really can't understand why there is not a clear answer as in the case of PULP (RON 95), ULP (RON 91) or Vortex/Premium (RON 98).?
TBH, when I saw that E10 was supposed to have a RON of 93-94 I was thinking of using it in my FL1 V6 and save a couple of bucks, but not at the expense of long term damage.

First E10 is now mandatory as the base unleaded fuel in NSW (only), and 91 has been deleted.

I think the NRMA is assuming that E10 will remain 91 with 10% ethanol added which will bring it to 93-94. This would be common sense if the refiners/distributors had a pool of 91 to add 10% ethanol to.

However now that there is no pool of 91 in NSW, what is the bet that the refiners will produce/import say 89 octane base fuel and add ethanol as the law states an octane of 91. It actually states 91 on many of teh E10 pumps.

If I were the manage rof a refiner /distributor that is what I would do, as the fewer octane enhancers added, the lower the cost.

I thought that too, but the article in the NRMA Open Road says 1 Jul 2011 and all the service stations in my local area and into NSW are still selling 91 Ron Unleaded as well as E10 - the exception being BP that dropped unleaded some time ago.

the advertised RON is the minimum number....

E10 fuel comes in 91, 93, 95, 98 blends. in the 91+93 varients they can included upto 5% without having to advertise it. in the same way that they can sell you 98 ron fuel advertised as 91 ron at the 91 ron price (but they dont) they can sell you a lower blend of ethenol than the advertised % (but usuallly dont)

I think e10 is the begining we will have much higher levels pushed on us over the next 5 to 10 years and all fuel will have ethonal added to help the enviroment we wont have a choice
You need to find another service station which sells cheaper fuel.

FWIW, I purchased a fuel alcohol analyzer/tester this week ... so far, alot of the supposedly NON E10 fuels I've tested ... contain 10% ethanol !!!

Are you REALLY getting what you think you're paying for !?

We challenged one servo owner, who stated 100% his ULP contained no ethanol ... then tested the fuel we'd just purchased in front of him .... contained almost 10% ethanol!! ... he was embarassed to say the least

    again ... FWIW

Another thought, people would go to that servo buying what they think is ULP to use in their Lawnmowers/Whippersnippers/Chainsaws/etc thinking they are getting the right fuel and as we know E10 is NOT recommended in small motors and they then run the risk of long term damage. How many other servo's are doing the same thing? I think I might buy PULP for my small motors from now on!!
