As has been pointed out....40+million viewers in the states alone...plus being showed in another 147 countries. FFS....that's positive. Positive for us as a country and positive for those that are struggling in various tourist type industries.

Maybe we need a negative nellies section and can throw in negative threads plus those other woe is me type threads and you can all go throw a massive pity party and drone and groan on about how tough life is, or who da bad man is etc, and hopefully drown in a cesspool of negativity. That way us grounded folk who look at a glass as being half full don't have to step around the dribble,

P.S. yeah yeah yeah....well aware I do not have to read certain tripe and generally don't...just seems to be pervading of late and that is the problem with negative attitudes and the woe is me's....they tend to bring down those around them and would hate to see this forum get more and more negative and woe is me threads constantly going up

    Stevo,

Mate Im sorry to read your negative thread about people posting negative threads!. I think it was a bit like being a knocker when you expressed your dissapointment about people being knockers!!
(sorry, Stevo I just plain couldnt help it! please forgive me!)

    Thanks VNX...

I vaguely remember Tiger Woods costing us mexicans 3 mill. If he cost us this I reckon Oprah is a bargain.

This kind of thing bugs me. This "Oprah" visit is being hyped up to the stage where it almost seems like we have a Royal visit on our hands.

    It's not. Really, it's not.

It's not as if she is famous for anything of any significance to the human race, no inventions of radical improvements to medical science or anything worthwhile. She just sits and talks to people on TV for a living. Yes, she may be good at it (not necessarily my opinion, but given she has made a s***load of money out of it, my opinion may be a minority vote), but worthy of $3.5m of taxpayers money being spent?

I can understand that having loud Texans in even louder shirts and Stetsons wandering around bellowing " 'scuse me bud, but how do I get to In....doooo....roooo....pilly" is good for the country. Really, I can. But do we need to get to hero worshipping their minor celebrities?

I can just imagine the scene: Oprah descends the steps from the Qantas A380, still wearing her Qantas First Class PJs, while 12 classes of primary schoolkids stand waving the "Stars and Stripes" at the bottom of the steps, and and Aboriginal digeridoo player merrily tooting away over to one side.

But hey, clearly I'm not bitter

Actually sheerluck she is a bit more important in terms of earnings/ cross promotion for our tourisim than any "Royal visit". Through her abilities and skill she has managed to earn over 300 mill / year from her shows whereas the royals where born into a family that sucks money out of their country and ours with their citizens given no option.
Go and have a look at the amount of HER money and time Oprah has dropped into multiple charities and causes in both her own country and others, then go and see how much HRH gives of her OWN $$$ not money grafted from the polulation.
In saying this I only watch the Oprah show occasionally if it grabs my interest and am not a big fan but as stated by several here the returns will be massively greater than the outlay.
I am not sure if it's true but some have stated that the bingle bloody hell campaign cost over 80 MILLION!!! Now which of these 2 represent better value and will give a far better return?

Last time I read anything running Buckingham Palace costs about $2 per British tax payer. Every travel brochure on the UK I have ever seen has a picture of the changing of the guards at Buck House, if you discount Queen Betty II as a tourist attraction you are very sadly mistaken. Every day outside Buck place there are thousands of tourists outside the palace while Oprah only has a couple of dozen in her studio.

The mere presence of any of the Royals at a charity raises it's profile and therefore increases the income of that charity. Prince Phillip and Prince Charles do little other than working with charities.

What is more, every time Betty visits Australia people travel and turn out to see her creating tourism dollars, and further it costs Australia far less to have the Queen as the permanent Head of State and appoint the Governor General than it would if we had to elect a President every few years.

Flying Spaghetti Monster Save Betty I say! Damn Oprah!!

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

This was to the tune of over 1 million people per year deficit.
Apparently tourism operators are doing it tough ATM.
    Humph tell me about it.
My main source of Income over Winter is driving tourists to Mt Baw Baw. I've been doing it for 7 years now, the mob I work for has been doing it for 12.
Last Year Mt Baw Baw, (which is owned and run by the Victorian Government), put on 2 buses and somehow managed to misplace our advertising copy so it didn't make the official tourism publication in time. This year they have put on a 3rd Bus.
3 Years ago we would have 3 or 4 vehicles a day on Baw Baw, now I'm lucky to get there twice a week.
So, Victorian Taxpayers. YOUR tax dollars are taking money out of my pocket.
The buses are not licensed to carry Passengers, have no Alpine Accreditation and as Government vehicles are not to be used for hire or reward. I hate to say it, but I've been praying for them to crash and start an Inquiry.

Buggar the third world, it's a free market.
Never let facts get in the way of a good argument...

AU has ~9.7 nurses/1000 people (2007) - up there with most developed countries.

AU wages/salaries seem quite high. A friend who is a paediatric nurse earns ~2x what she used to get in Germany.

I am not saying there aren't shortages, but we aren't doing too badly.

Didnt Tiger bring 300 women from Chicago with him as well ???

This has potential to be a good thing as long as they show more then just the opera house, Gold Coast and Port Douglas.

Considering how messed up the US economy is though not sure its gonna see a big influx of tourists.
