Here's the spiel from the Caltex website...

Vortex Diesel contains an anti-foaming agent that significantly reduces the risk of splashing. It also eliminates most of the odours that are associated with traditional diesel fuel.
We believe it's the most refined fuel for advanced turbo-diesel engines on the market.

    Key benefits:
    • Cleans the engine while driving
    • Improves engine efficiency
    • Reduces foaming to prevent splashback
    • Suitable for all diesel-powered vehicles
Read into that what you will. Shell also does a Vpower Diesel, which I suppose is the same thing.
For the record I only use Caltex diesel and it has never done me wrong.

I have a mate who works for BP, and he said Vortex is a denser fuel, so you will get better distance for you dollar. Don't start thinking by huge amounts however.
While BP is a very clean fuel being very low in Sulphur.

Personally vortex has become my new fuel where it can, I just support BP anymore.

Vortex is just an advertising ploy to get a few extra cents a litre. At normal car type Caltex service stations there is no option but to use it. At truck service stations where there is a car section and a truck section you will generally find the trucks get "normal diesel" for a few cents less and the cars must use Voretx and pay a higher price.

Dunno how true it is but I've read the reason Australia was so slow to recieve 'quality' diesel engines, was the lack of refinement in the fuel.

Then again, this is a country that unfortunately has a car industry that wanted to keep petrol engines in the dark ages too.....and that was nothing to do with the fuel....so who knows what the truth is....???!!!
