Very interesting reading Rick and thanks for the link, it sounded like some people your self included had had very good experiences with True Tracks at both ends of the vehicle, as was stated providing they had traction control.

That being the case what advanatge does a Detroit have in the rear over a True Track if your veicle has traction control?

I know there isn't much difference in price but the True Tracks are cheaper and if they work as well then why buy a Detroit for the rear?

    cheers,
    Terry

If you haven't got TC and want maximum traction you'd go Detroit.

If you have Sals rear end in a 110/Defender a Detroit is an easier fit as it's actually a No-Spin centre and not a full hemisphere. ie, you split the original diff case and just replace the side and sun gears with the No-Spin centre so there's no re-setup of the backlash, it's just bolt in and go.

If you have TC and a Rover rear Tru-Tracs or Quiaffe ATB's would be nice.

    detroit about to arrive

    thanks for the thread all...
I'm new to the forum and ordered a detroit from lucky8 about a week ago after discussing it at some length with the wonderful justin cooper here in hobart (he runs one in his rangie). It's goin in the rear of my 96 300TDi disco. I am expecting the 'I can't even notice it's in there' effect on the bitumen.

Although the torque of the 300tdi isn't huge and I only run 245/70 tyres, I do have concerns about breaking an axle and killing the diff. Anyone have any thoughts to share on this one?

    cheers

If or as some will say when you snap the axleshaft in the rear diff have a look at either ashcroft, KAM, hopefully hytuff/maxi (I got a set for my salisbury+detroit in my def)and Lucky8 also supply a strengthend rear set of axles, enjoy the detroit.

Have fun with the detroit locker! I have decided to go trutrac front and rear on my Disco 1...my thinking was based on the reports from satisfied Trutrac owners and the apparent inevitability of busting an axle with a locker. I suppose it cant be avoided that at some point the front wheels will be in the air and all the drive will be going through one side on the rear if you have a locker....snappo?....I am a conservative driver and only run 31's but I do get far from home and I dont want to deal with an axle breaking out in the sticks. I am hoping that the trutrac option will reduce my risk of axle snappo over the locker option but still give me a significant improvement over open diffs. They are on their way for under $1200 landed. cant wait...

    axles then

OK - so the axle thing is a bit of a worry - maybe it won't break - then again maybe it will... might be best to just take care of it before it happens.

There are many threads I notice about many strong rear axles - ashcroft/KAM/MaxiDrive etc etc. I guess on this one, price might be the decider. I'll keep you informed.

Mine went up the OTT towing a camper without breaking an axle, but obviously it depends on the circumstances.
