It's not actually my place yet. We were just about to sign when I asked the solicitor if I could get Mr Happy to pay for 1/2 the driveway fence when he casually mentioned that it was a shared driveway arrangement.

I would have thought that would be a fairly major point so I'm a bit disappointed that he didn't highlight that fact to me after he went through the paperwork .

Are you serious ? Good fresh clean rainwater and you want to chlorinate it!, thereby ensuring it tastes terrible and makes an absolutely undrinkable cup of tea to boot. Why not flouridate it as well ?, toss in some arsenic to really stuff it up. As for........Roof water is always risky to drink...........again, are you serious? Thousands, probably millions of rural Australians have lived and are living on rainwater tanks without problems. You've got to be kidding.

With the problems you've had so far are you sure you still want this place?
Are the neighbours the reason for the previous occupants letting it sit vacant for so long?

    Well said Deano, I concur.
Also draining tanks to refill with town water is a backward step.
Once you have lived with tankwater only, you will not want to go back to town water, you can smell it and it tastes terrible.
I dont have filters either, no real need. Nothing beats pure rainwater.

The actual house is the best we've ever seen & it's likely to be the best we're ever going to be able to afford. The fact that everything around it is unfinished is part of the attraction as we can do our own improvements & as such increase the value of the place for the future.

The neighbours are putting us off the joint big time though. It's getting to the stage where I'm looking at security fencing just to keep them out.
The previous owners had 3 security cameras set up - one at the road end of the driveway & 2 at the garage end of the house. I'd always wondered why they'd gone to the trouble of installing them...........until now. Virtually every other house we've looked in the area we've had the owners comment that they rarely lock the doors.

The reason it's sat vacant for so long is mainly due to the work being needed around the place. All the ultra hard work has been done: there's massive walls built out of boulders, there's a levelled area for a tennis court big shed, all the basics are there but it just looks crap.
The asking price was also way too high to start with but it's now down to our limit.

Saying that though, we are now seriously looking at other properties just for peace of mind.

On the plus side, my 'investment' property is out of the way so we can start saving some more money & my Dad is not in a big hurry to move out so that means my collection is OK where it is ATM.

I think all the dramas you should be expecting with the neighbours would mean you won't enjoy yourself at this place. I'd let it sit for longer. Don't be in any rush. Maybe the price will drop further. Maybe something better will turn up.
Maybe get a really big guard dog and then maybe the neighbours would like a fence to keep your dog out of their yard :-)

Only just come accross this thread, so I dialled back a few pages and bought myself up to date. Talk about bad vibes ! Do you really want to live here ? It might be a great property but do you want to live here and bring up a family in this environment ? Would you be comfortable heading off to work each morning leaving your missus and kid(s) here, would she feel comfortable. Living in the country can be a great lifestyle and a great place to bring up your family, but gee whiz, this place doesn't feel right, from the security cameras to 'Mr Happy' to the solicitor who didn't give you the 'good oil'. (Must be Pedro's fault ). My advice, for what it's worth, walk away and have a real good think.

I bought a block of land with my wife to be and built the house I wanted. Having tried valiantly to live there with toxic neighbours for 3 years my advice to you is:

Don't. Try again, find a place where the neighbours can't easily bug you.

The stress of coping did me no good at all. Moving away saved my sanity.

At least where I live now the neighbours have sufficient distance to be ignored.

Scouse, you don't need this, there will be others, i'd be walking away as many have suggested.

My brother would say a friendly but firm visit from a biker to lay down the new relationship between you two would fix it. But then you are lowering yourself to a new level.

People like these neighbours are just mean selfish unhappy people. They will do nothing but take your health and happiness away from you. Good neighbours say hello and are helpful happy people. I'd guess no matter what approach you take with these people, you will not get you very far, it will be a struggle all the way. Just move on

That, or sit back, as you said, and wait for the price to come way down.
