Hasn't it evolved ? I miss the "mix" of classes in the early days ; bmws, ford Sierras,Nissan gtrs, those big Jags and throw in a couple of corollas - a bit more dangerous, but great fun too watch!

Touring car racing was a lot more interesting then. How about George Fury in a DATSUN BLUEBIRD getting pole at Bathurst in '84, Robbie Frankevic making the local V8s look silly and winning the ATCC in '86 in a VOLVO 240, or the Victoria Police Studebaker Larks in the '60s!

I might watch Bathurst for a while on Sunday if I have nothing else to do, but the interest that once kept me glued to the chair all day started to disappear with the Silly Sierras and has just about gone with the current two-bodyshell formula.

I remember watching Bathurst as a kid in the 80's, watching the Jags, Beemers, Holdens, Falcons run wild over the mountain was just awe inspiring to me ... I just wish I was around to have watched the Toranas race in their prime.
When the Sierra's come into it with the international rules, it kinda stagnated the racing excitement for me, until the GTR hit the scene with Richards and Skaife at th helm ... Watching that rained out Bathurst race in I think 92?? was memorable for many reasons, all the carnage for one, but mainly for that car! What a beast!

I'd like to see the likes of Toyota or Mitsubishi step up, much to the disgust of others, IMO I think they would be a formiddable force, HELL, even Hyundai could step up to the plate with a supercar based on thier V8 Genisis (Released everywhere else on earth but here!) It'd certinly break up the field quite a bit and attract more interest from a wider demographic.
Though theywill find it a futile feat trying to win over HOLDEN!!!! :twisted:

My memories of watching Bathurst go back as far as the XB 2 door Falcoons VS Toranas.
Was so EASY to remember as I would go nextdoor to my mates place and watch on their BIG TV.His Dad had a XB coupe,a burnt orange Fairmont with everything 351 auto.His mums car was much more desirable these days.A GENUINE white XA Superbird Coupe,a 302 manual,motor was worked and had side pipes and those big Falcon decals over the rear gaurds.
After the race they would go racing one another around the nieghborhood.My olds hated the behaviour.To this day they still dont know I celebrated 3 Bathurst races that way in their cars,last was the Moffat 1 2 victory in the XC coupes.
I was in primary school at the time,yes STUPID behavior on the part of my mates parents,I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT:twisted::twisted::twisted::twisted::twisted::tw isted:
The SuperBird toweled the XB every time,mates mum could drive;););)

Hi LandyAndy, mate weather has been a bit all over the place as usual but the days have been really warm, nights cold with a bit of drizzle. We will see what happens for qualifying today and the shoot out tomorrow.

Got a chance to have a walk around, who needs a pit pass when you have a gun and a taser :D

So far so good, everytime we tried to duck in to check out practice yesterday it was red flagged. :twisted:

Im working in the station today so wont get to go up, but got a weekend pass for saturday and sunday with night shift on each night, im gunna be tired on Monday, but its all worth it :D

Who remembers the first "in car" camera. featured in Peter Williamsons Toyota Celica, (before being used in Dick Johnsons car) complete with running commentary.

For what it was, that car flew and such a laconic easy going chat from the driver.:p

@Landy ... We used ta have BBQ's at home where dad would have a few mates around, he'd drag out the huge behemoth lump that was a television out into the garage and half the lounge room along with it, as a kid having the inside outside was SOOOOO FRIKKIN COOL MAN! Mum would be yellin at him, but he was like "Its ok Darls, bring out the salad will ya!"

We had young blokes that lived about 5 houses up from us, not that they needed any excuse, but Bathurst weekend always found them a good excuse to go fry tyres rather than sausages ... So between the 2, I was in my glory! LOL

I started losing interest big time when Tony Cochrane came on the scene fresh from IMG and all he could see was $$$ signs at building up a racing series from virtual scratch (which he knew nothing about initially, he's a marketing guru with most of his time previously spent on the Pro Tennis circuit)
He was the push behind the mass marketing and taking control from CAMS of the V8 category (and yes, we all called CAMS the Conspiracy Against Motorsport :D)

His approach started depleting the bottom echelons of racing, making it much harder for club motorsport and the feeder categories to survive by totally screwing over the promoters and axing the permanent circuits for 'street races'.

The permanent circuits only survived on that one big Touring Car race each year, and that subsidised the rest of the years racing (they could never make enough from gate receipts at clubbies to cover costs)
Without permanent circuits club/state level racing wither and dies, and those events are where your stars from tomorrow get their starts before progressing to the National Formula Ford Championship, etc.

I was involved in club/state and National Championships, initially as a driver then as a mechanic and in the finish I just got the :toilet: and walked away, as did a few mates.
It wasn't fun any more.
Too much politicking, too much BS, and things at that level went into a real decline.
Interestingly only a few of my mates from those times are still involved in any degree.

Anyway, I started going to Bathurst when on Stuvac for the HSC in '82 :D
It became a permanent event with a group of us for quite a few years, camping each year at McPhillamy Park, I think the earliest I ever got there was Tuesday. :o
We had a good time, used to go to the RSL for showers and had plenty of good hidey holes in my Jeep to smuggle Tooheys :angel:
