Some people may not know it is there. One option may be to put a sticky at the top of each tech forum: e.g. "Look here before posting" with a link to the good oil and any vehicle specific tech info.

Also - do we have buyers guides? or FAQ for new vehicle owners. That may cat down the number of duplicate threads.

Maybe the topic of this thread should be included as a segment of "Grumpy Old Men" .

Could have gone to soapbox if the thread title was along the lines of ..."Help needed - Muslims/Terrorists/Catholics/Detainees/Boat People Need Our Support"....

The funny thing is that in order to answer the Q we often do a search to find the relevant thread/s.

I find it annoying when you two or three threads within a page asking amost exactly the same question, or when someone gives a nice, considered answer in a thread, then two or three replies later another comes along and says much the same thing sometimes several hours or a day later. To me its obvious they never bothered reading any of the previous replies. (tsk tsk people!)

Much like when someone comes in halfway through a thread and asks a Q that's already been answered two or three replies earlier......

    JUST THOUGHT iD ASK....

Hmm, maybe we do need to move this to the soapbox

Yeah I agree, of course there then is the danger of telling people to do a search and being accused of being grumpy! Often we have to do a search to find the relevant thread/s

It always amuses me to see two or three threads within a page asking much the same question, a bit like when someone gives a nice, considered answer in a thread, then two or three replies later another comes along and says much the same thing sometimes several hours or a day later.

I am pretty handy with computers and I am always the "go to" person regarding anything tech.

You know how I fix 99% of problems I am given or come across????

    I GOOGLE THE DAMN THING!!!!!!!!

Thats how easy it is. 99.9% of problems in the world have happened before and people have written about it on forums etc and there is the fix!

The same thing goes for ALL problems, be it animal, vegetable, or mineral, or computers, or mechanical, ETC

    GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR....

If someone is web-savvy enough to:

    a) find AULRO
    b) register
    c) post

then one can presume they also possess sufficient intelligence to locate and then use Search function, especially once they are reminded of its existence.

Therefore, I do not search on behalf of users and present links, as this simply teaches people they just need to ask and work will be done for them. I also don't know exactly what keywords they'd want to use.

In the D3/D4/RRS Zone we've had a number of new users ask questions that have been recently much-discussed and the regulars are now getting them to search for the answers, which is good. We have also created a FAQ which lists pretty much all the, well, FAQs. Of course, many people prefer to post again rather than read it, but that is human nature.

One or two petals may be offended by being asked to use the search function, but rather that than having the forum deluged with the same questions again and again which will simply turn off the regulars, who are the very people you need to keep things alive and new questions answered.

zuno555 - absolutely. I find this site very useful to make the point:

Let me google that for you

Lol, great find, a bit different (albeit rather direct ) to me saying "Google is your friend" all the time.

I've looked at The Good Oil and I just don't understand how to read it. I look at oils and rims and clearly the truth is in there thanks to the hard work of many members but stuffed if I can extract that truth. I'm sure it's my fault but the whole thing makes my eyes glaze over.

The first page is almost made up of nothing but stickys in a lot of the forums!! But then if we had a sticky on stickys it might help to clarify things

Guess it proves people just dont open their eyes and look before flapping their keyboard...
