Wow someone in AFMA may have to do some work for a change, I be dragged over the coals for that effort of not reporting it by its correct name.

    Cheers Ean
As the previous Observer Manager at AFMA I would hope you submit all the appropriate reports and logs. I assume you did not have an observer on for this trip. But I can assure you that while some people at AFMA can be a bit strange, they do work hard with minimal resources.

Not the most attractive looking fish is it, Marcos will be pleased to see it when he gets home from school, he loves sharks.

An understandable sentiment Ron. However AFMA are just trying to ensure the long term sustainability of our fisheries and the reporting is a necessary part of that process. That is not to say I think AFMA is doing a good job. I think they could have done a great deal more in relation to the Orange Roughy and Eastern Gemfish fisheries, for example.

    Cheers

What is the purpose of the reporting? Reporting it doesnt mean you have thrown it back.

No - not for things like this.

The Northern Prawn fishery promotes itself as being a sustainable fishery that can manage itself and there is a lot of evidence that this is the case. This fishery has also been at the front of limiting bycatch, particularly of larger animals such as turtles and dugongs. Even so, a lot of bycatch is still taken - Ean can explain better than I how much goes back alive.

When I was in AFMA I was in the office next to the person looking at revised management and we used to have long discussions on the pros and cons. When I left, trials were being planned that would lead to a transition to self management.

I hope they all went well but I have been out of touch for a while.
