Thread: Tyres ftom USA so cheap.

I am all for saving a quid or 2 but sadly all this importing is doing us more harm than good and pushing local prices up even more as they are selling less and still have same overheads to meet till they go broke and retail will be completely dead.

The other issue will be tyre compound may not be for aussie roads as we have terrible surfaces.

Most of the time its the local distributor that is pocketing the markup, the retailers get screwed. It is up to them to put pressure on the distributors to make the AU prices reasonable.

For example, the new Nikon D7000 camera is $1299 USD in the states. It is $1899.95 here. Local support / shipping isn't an excuse - I can get on from the US to here in 3 days for 40AUD.

From my conversations with people here the AU /wholesale/ price is more than the US /retail/ price.

That might be the case, but I doubt very much. Perhaps they need be a lot more competitive in their pricing and then people wouldn't import themselves. When you consider that we are paying one off freighting by air which is expensive as opposed to shipping by the container the balance swings to them being able to do it cheaper. But they also pay GST/stamp or whatever which probably brings it back to being on par.... but they buy in bulk and ....

Its like the whole shop local arguement to support the shops in your town, yeah fine and thats all good, but they can stick it if they are marking the prices right up and I can get it cheaper in the next town. Fuel is a brilliant example of this where I live, so with a long range tank I usually fill up either in Sydney or Yetholme and Orange can sell no fuel as opposed to ripping me off. The sellers need to get it right, and if the problem is at the retailer, the wholesaler or the manufacturer is not my problem.

i just re-read that website and if the vaule of the goods is below au$1000 then no duty.

If above the duty is calculated with shipping etc

I called customs and asked them, the duty is only payable on GOODS over 1000aud, postage isnt goods so isnt included. you could have 990aud tyres and 1000aud postage you still wouldnt pay duty... although they may investigate why the postage is so high!

I hear you and must agree. I have ordered similar myself and enjoyed the savings. I just thought I put my thoughts out there, I am guilty

No argument there either and find myself in same situation. Every dollar I save is better in my pocket etc.

I merely pointed out that private imports via wholesalers with less or no overheads are slowly choking the retailers as they have to crank their margins up to remain competitive.

I am doing same/similar and should practise what I preach but the lure of savings are just too great. You are right, I was pointing out the fiscal implications and what is happening in retail.

On my trips away I also plan ahead where better fuel prices are and potential savings etc. Its just natuaral I guess.

If theres a few dollars difference I'll spend local to support the Aussie mobs BUT where the savings are so HUGE then it's better off in my pocket.

I'm the first one to buy stuff locally when i can, but $500 saving is too big to miss unless i was mega rich... which i'm not..

Camera gear also i will buy O/S also as there is too big a difference, and finally cycling gear... again much cheaper o/s but from speaking to the retailers here its the wholesalers.. i can buy conti tyres cheapers delivered than they can buy them for (apparently)

Something is going to have to give at some point.. and yes the retailers suffer, but ultimately the wholesalers will suffer too...

THe internet has made the world a much smaller place

By the way... tyres are ordered and paid for... now the wait for their arrival
