Landrover owners club of vic - worth joining?

Just tossing up whether to part with the hard earned and join the LROCV. I have a D2 and keen to speak, drink and drive (not at the same time obviously) with other who have understand the peculiarities of the D2 TD5.

Getting to the meetings will be a bit of a mission - live in yarraville, work in Mulgrave. Have 9 mth old twins and barely time to scratch myself but keen never the less, weekend trips in particular.

Just like to hear your opinions, good or bad.

    cheers

    Chris

    Hi,

I have been a member of LROCV for coming up 4 years. LROCV was formed in 1963 and has something in the region of 700 members. We have a monthly meeting in Doncaster which is a pain in the arse to get to for myself frankly as I live near Geelong, so with Melbourne traffic it normally takes me nearly 2 hours to get to the meeting.I do not go to every meeting, dependent on work, but turn up when I can, meet friends for dinner and a beer then go to the meeting.

They hold regular driver training sessions, I did mine with LROCV in June 2007,
it was brilliant, I would highly recommend it. It is a very social, family orientated 4wd club with a long history.I had been on lots of day trips at weekend and longer trips at other times of the year, all free, you just put your name down and turn up.A good way to meet new people and have a fun day out as well.

I have met many, many people a lot I now class as friends, all from different walks of life but all have the same common interests in Land Rovers, 4wding and camping etc. You can get out of it as much as you want to, it is really up to you.I too have two young children so I understand that time can be limited, but I would recommend coming along to a meeting or two, maybe go on a day trip before deciding whether to join or not.

I renew my membership every year. What I have saved on buying batteries (through Exides discount for LROCV members)alone over this year and last has paid for my membership for both years. The meetings can be a bit long winded at times to be honest but you do not have to attend, there are plenty of members around Victoria who do not come to or raely attend meeting because of where they live.

    Regards, Col.

Don't let me discourage you from joining LROCV.
FYI there are quite a few D2 owners round these parts (out west) from Hoppers, Melton, The Marsh (and further out to Daylesford and Ballarat), up to Kyneton and across to Sunbury.
Wombat is a favourite for a bush drive and a camp.

I've been a member for just under 2 years - so relatively new to the club. Been on some great weekend/long weekend trips, but haven't had a chance to get away on any extended ones yet.

Meetings tend to be a mixed bag - as they probably are with a lot of other clubs. Sometimes they are over quickly and theres plenty of time afterwards to chat, and other times they seem to go on forever.

Theres a good range of books in the club library, and some very knowledgeable people that have been around LR for ever.

If you are new to 4WDing or Landrovers it would be worth joining just for the subsidised driver training if nothing else. Works out cheaper than doing a course commercially, and the intructors all have good landrover knowledge so its relevant to your vehicle.
Do a few trips, get to know some people and see if it suits you after that.

As Mick_Marsh said, there are plenty of people on this forum in the wild west, so hook into some day trips here regardless of what you decide to do about LROCV.

    This is a Wombat!!!

Seriously, check out the vid, and then do a search in the Victorian section of the trip reports here.... There's a few Wombat related reports to whet the appetite. Then, check out the rest of the youtube vid's on Wombat too.

Wombat is a state forest between Bacchus Marsh and Gisborne, closer to Gisborne.

The "Wombat" referred to is The Wombat State Forest which adjoins the north side of The Lerderderg State park. Rough location is from halfway along the Gisbourne Bacchus Marsh Road to Blackwood/Trentham area.
The two popular camping locations are Firth Park and O'Briens Crossing.

OMG that is awesome. Hows the blue V8 mud boat ! I do love the sound of a good V8.

Consider the appetite whetted! I think I'll like Wombat
