    Old hut help?

    G'day chaps,

Dad and a few of his friends have some property and they are thinking of building an old stockmans hut or something similar down by the river. I was just wondering wether any one can help with some websites so they can get some ideas.

    Cheers

    old stockmans hut

How do you build an 'Old Stockmans Hut' ? Would you have to be an old stockman? Just joking. I have a similar set up in Amphitheatre to what you are contemplating. Will be up there this weekend and can send you some photos of what I have built up over the last 12 years.

If you are after the ambience and looks of a typical old stockman's hut, I am afraid I can be of no assistance at all.......but if you are looking at ideas for fairly cheap rural part time accommodation, weekender etc, have you ever considered those largish corrugated iron tube structures that are used by local councils to manufacture large culverts.
A tube structure such as this can be partially sunk into the surrounding terrain, with the exposed upper section covered with fill that is taken from around and under.
The soil/rocks on top offer both temperature control and a good way of stopping the structure from rolling down the hill on a windy day! Put the garden on the roof.
A floor could be built inside about 1/3 of the way up offering secure (and climatically controlled) storage area below and a spacious living area up top.
Doorways, windows at either end for ventilation and light, and extensions in the future are no problems as the tube can simply be added to.
Just an idea that with a bit of thought could be enlarged upon somewhat and perhaps fill the need. As I said earlier, as far as the looks go, it would look more like a hill or bump in the ground rather than a typical stockman's hut.
    Regards
    Glen

    Old Hut

    G'Day Luke,
I have an original settlers hut on my property I am in the process of restoring. It was built circa 1870 -1880. One of the last high country slab huts left on the northern tablelands. Maybe these photos may give you & your father some ideas.

    Regards
    Robert Williams.

I might've visited a few Huts here in the Vic High Country and even taken a few photos .... not a "photographer" BTW.

Not all are Cattlemens Huts .... Miners, fishing, forestry, movie sets, skiing, bushwalking to name a few others. Check out the link below or in my signature which will take you to [ame="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sschmez/sets/"]sschmez's photosets on Flickr[/ame]

    Amphitheatre Hut

My shack is 6.5m x 10m with a 3 m wide veranda. Sleeps 12 in built in bunks and has a huge open fireplace. Property is about 3 acres on the Avoca River. No power, ice powered fridge, tank water and kettle powered shower. We have small solar panel which provides lighting. We resist generators because they lead to tv, radio, computers etc. (Might as well stay home). Swimming hole in the river and the Pyrenees Ranges to explore. Just had 14 vehicles from the Victorian Military Vehicle Club there for the weekend. With all the recent rain, the tracks in the Pyrenees are littered with fallen trees and rough as guts in places. Perfect. Plenty of foxes and rabbits about too.

Why not look at the High Country Huts section of this very website.

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/victorian-...-general-chat/

If you look in the Ritchies Hut thread you'll even see some plans that will show you how it was constructed -this is one method used by a famous old hut builder called Fred Fry.

Depends how "genuine" you want it to be, I guess.
