    Andy Irons has died

    For the surfers out there.

Andy Irons has died last night on his way home to Hawaii after pulling out of the RipCurl Pro event in Puero Rico due to illness.

At this stage it is unclear of how he died, but there have been reports suggest that it was dengue fever.

RIP Andy, you were a true legend and you will be missed by all of us.

Initial reports put his death down to Dengue Fever, contracted in either Portugal or Puerto Rico.

Amazing how dengue can take out someone so fit. A bit scary really.

    RIP Andy.

Dengue Fever, itself, is not usually deadly but the closely related Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (different virus) is. The two are generally reported together and are not separated in the statistics. Overal 1.5 million confirmed cases world wide in 2010 with more than 2000 deaths. Puerto Rico has had about 14,000 cases with more than 20 deaths. In Australia, 13 cases reported in Queensland with one death (see More dengue fever cases uncovered in north Qld - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)).
