Don't get me wrong, I think Australia is a great country, but like many others it could be better. As for better democracies, well, the problem is that EU countries are now out because citizens of one EU member don't have direct democratic access to the EU and irrespective of "democratic process" of their home country the EU can make laws and regulations that over-ride the rights of the member states.

The US is structured better but has been corrupted by capital and the need for political donations.

The result is that while we have an imperfect parliamentary democracy it is one that is worthwhile working to improve. For a start we need a Bill of Rights codifying what are our minimum rights, freedoms and responsibilities, so Government can't by way of legislation or regulation infringe our basic rights. Rights like freedom of association which are being erroded in the anti-bikie laws.

Now I'll just go out and sing Advance Australia Square, that is of course unless there is a queen nearby!
I must admit I was a bit surprised by your earlier post and what you say in this post is more like what I would have expected. I often play the Devil's Advocate, but never expect other to do the same.

I trust all will enjoy your choral endeavours.

    Cheers

so what exactly is democracy??? Australia has one but it is flawed?, the U.S has one and it is flawed? England has one based on teh westminster system and that is flawed???

No matter what democracy we have it will be flawed, but it is as sure as hell better the other options out there??

The Victorian ALP has just admitted to using previously secret database of personal profiles of individual voters, complete with information on memberships, letters to the editor, contact with MP and at political rallies. Revealed: How the ALP keeps secret files on voters the Liberal/National coalition has admitted having a similar database without revealing any more information.

I wonder if the databases were started in 1984?
In Queensland in the days of old Joh we had a police special branch. When Wayne Goss ( ALP ) won the election in 1989 the general exodus of files from the office of the special branch was momentous. But then that only happens in other parts of the world doesn't it.What is happening today...only time will tell.

    A true democracy?

Just which country are you talking about, surely not Australia? There is no right to free speach, there is no right to defend yourself and there is no freedom to keep and enjoy your own property free from the intervention of government.

We live in a parlimentary monarchy, we only have free speach within certain government defined limits. Our only democratic right is the responsibility to vote for those who will dictate us for the ensuing period. There are laws of sedition defined and administered by the government as they choose.

Free from bloodshed: Do you remember the Cronulla Riots?

Wot - youse kant even spel Orztraalyaan propper!
I dont recall using the word "true" when I spoke about a democracy, and gee wizz yes there was the riots, but if you know your history there was a bloody sight bigger one in Brisbane in WW2 over the Yanks and they are our mates, well according to our PM they are

And not All of the special branch files were destroyed

I know of one case where a person recieved a letter in 1969 in regards to a case that was dropped and the file "destroyed" only to have the file laid in front of him in 1985 Oh yeah! it was destroyed like h---, the 1985 incident was a case of wrong person, wrong picture, and they went off half cocked but it proved that the file sitll exists
