    Are You Roadworthy?

Went for a drive around Narbethong on Sunday and whilst travelling through Healsville the coppers were doing roadies at the lookout heading out of town. I was fortunate that when i went passed they were full.
They had cars, bikes and 4wd's that they were inspecting.
Noticed a fair few 4wds with the dreaded bright yellow sticker along with the traditional fully sick cars in town.

Some 6 hours later this time Melbourne bound they had a RBT set up which i was signalled into, dont drink and drive so no worries there but a truck covered in mud drew some attention.
I was given a warning about my mud tyres ever slighty protuding past the flairs and i had also lost a mudflap on my travels.

So a timely reminder to everyone on the roads this xmas to make sure your Landies are in tip top shape.

The cops have done a media campaign Saying they will be out in full force, so we have been warned. No crying fowl for offences. do the right thing.
Broken lights etc etc, people can't afford to fix them, but a lot can afford smokes and beer.
Yes I don't smoke or drink, but that's another story, I'm still poor

Although I know the Rangie is technically unroadworthy, I know what is wrong with it, and apart from a couple of small oil leaks , ... And maybe the light bar It is pretty much ok. Good brakes, tyers, etc. No excuse for having these sort of things not up to scratch IMO.

If I get done during the holidays, I'll cop it on the chin... Wouldn't be the first time, but it has always been the bike in the past - most people can hear it coming from a couple of towns away...

    Cheers - Gav.

When it comes to "Roadworthy", some members of the constabulary down in these parts are ridiculous. A friend had his workvan deemed "Unroadworthy" by a local member of the force because he had a half inch tear in the upholstery. Rather than argue (which can make the situation much worse), he had the item repaired and presented the vehicle to a Vicroads inspection centre thirty kilometres away (who were rather bemused).
I have just put one of my Mercedes in for a roadworthy. I pointed out the inch long tears and holes in the drivers seat. He didn't think it was much of a problem.
The roadworthy system down here is documented but it always surprises me how much those who should know, don't.

The only two issues on my D1 is a minor crack (have to look hard for it) in the windscreen caused by a stone from oncoming traffic (could happen anywhere/time), and a missing rear mudflap which got ripped off while trailing (hadn't noticed?!). :P

So far there has been no issues raised by the RBT crews in Melbourne, and doubt any problems from the local cops either.

the biggest part of not getting reamed at an inspection station is your attitude..... the police can and will pick on ANYTHING if they are in the right mood....

They'll always find something if they want to, there's a difference between safe and roadworthy and provided the former isn't compromised, what you get done for will be the direct result of how you carry yourself.

Although, the loaded questions **** me - "Gee, this is riding a bit high isnt it?" <<<<--- How the hell do you answer that?

Too many variables. Pretty much anything other than standard can be interpreted as unroadworthy. If the RTA or copper an idiot that thinks he knows all (have had a few of these that have absolutely no mechanical knowledge) and the rebuttle that if they think it needs checking is BS, they should have to know and prove it is unroadworthy.
No issue with dangerous cars, but some of the canaries I have seen and had in my youth defy belief. Costs you wether you are right or wrong. IMHO if the item you are stickered for is infact not illegal or dangerous the police department or rta issuing the sticker should have to pay for the inspection and your time, beacause they got it wrong. The problem is the inspector will usually find something else no matter how minor that will vallidate the sticker.
Nearly any of our cars could technically be stickered.
There were some police officers in Albany in the mid 80's that would sticker new vehicles as people drove them out of the local dealership.
I know we got done in a mates VH Commodore in 1984 because the headlight wipers did not work and there had been a big storm O/N and he had approx 3mm of water in an indicator assembly.
