Seems to me the Qld Government has been quite open about the current proposal. It has been in the public arena for about 6 months. The Premier issued a news release about it on 20 June this year (see Ministerial Media Statements). More than a thousand people have already made submissions (see Ministerial Media Statements). The cessation of mining and the significant expansion of the national parks estate have been talked about for years. I even heard about it in Canberra.

What the impacts of the current proposal will be on recreational activity is not clear from what I have read but I don't believe it signals gloom and doom though no doubt dogs will be a no no.

You should write to express your concerns and suggestions. But as some one who has assessed public submissions re this kind of proposal, can I suggest you will get a much better out come if your submissions are constructive and informative. Rabid submissions will just be noted and change little.

    Cheers

I couldnt agree more that rabid submissions are not effective - I make submissions every week for a living in a self employed capacity, so I can concur with that. I asked people on another forum this morning to make reasoned and reasonable submissions for the very reason that ranting will not help, and that anyone assessing it will likely turn off.

Further governments look at feedback to gauge public opinion before committing themselves - if they think they have already lost the 4wding and fishing vote because the majority of the submissions are rabid and pre-judged in their content, for example, they will not be too concerned about being conservative in their changes on Stradbroke. If they think they can still win that vote and still get some green vote they will tend to allow for the interests of both. Lets not lose sight of the fact that this government in particular is absolutely driven by public opinion. Lets also not lose sight of the fact that this government is relying on the green vote preferences to have any hope of getting re-elected at the next election, which is why a persuasive and strong voice is required to combat green vote buying as much as possible. Having said that it will not stop the changes, but modification and ameliorisation is the key.

I am very keen to get people to write in and provide well thought out submissions and ask that the recreational use be kept - however there is no doubt that this government WILL take away aspects of what people have enjoyed and used responsibly for many decades on Stradbroke Island. If you lived in Queensland you would not have difficulty apprehending the likely changes as I have done.

Is not the principal aim to preserve Stradbroke, not preserve motorised recreation for a minority?

    Why cant both be acheived?

They are calling for feedback. I would like to see that feedback not just from people who dont use the Island but from people who do...and if you use the Island for recreation you can write in and put your view. Which is precisely what I have asked like minded people who actually use the Island to do.

Brian you are entitled to your opinion, so go express it, if you intend using the Island for non-4wding, camping etc but please dont set up an argument on this thread.

    Cheers

I thought I was stating the bleeding obvious, not starting an argument.

Brian, your comment about preserving the island, not preserving motoring for the minority was inflammatory given my post.

If you dont want to support what I am saying that is fine of course, and as I said you could even write into the government asking them for the opposite of what I am saying (but to do so without using the island - including bush walking site seeing etc - might be somewhat unwarranted), but my plug is for people to make sure the Government preserves the right of a significant number of people to use the Island in a responsible way (as I would say 99% of us who 4wd and camp there do) not to debate the merits of doing so. I have advertised the fact that support is needed to preserve that, and thats where it should end. Having said that our little off beat discussion keeps it at the top of the board so more people who love the camping and beach driving way of life/holiday can be appraised of it and write in if they wish to

    Cheers
