Please speak now to preserve recreation on Straddie

The State Govt are tying to change North Stradbroke in a big way - no beach camping on Main Beach and quite possibly no dogs at Flinders, and it appears no beach driving on Main - as well as no more visits to the Keyholes...

Please read the short doc put out by the Govt - http://www.derm.qld.gov.au/stradbrok...new-vision.pdf

...and send you e-mail to the e-mail address on the last page of that.

    Cheers

I have read the pdf (your link) and cannot read anything there that supports what you are saying.
    Quote:
    The vision seeks feedback on:
    • the possible provision of additional land for
recreational activities which are not permitted in
national parks (motorised sports, camping with dogs,
    sporting and recreational commercial activities)
    • establishing a management regime for recreational
beach fishing and four wheel driving

This is opposite to what you are saying - am I missing something here?

Yes mate. Its about deciphering the Blight Government green speak. To start with the new proposed national park extends to the water all the way down the Eastern Side of the island - so it rules out Main Beach as a "recreation" (read camping etc) spot, and quite possibly as a 4wd spot. It also rules out the Keyholes as a recreation spot. Further "a management regime" - well we already have one, so thats a concern because it will likely impose greater limitations than what we currently have. The "possible provision" of additional land for recreation means, as I see it, land additional to what will otherwise be a massive national park across the island.

Further, there is a strong rumour that they are trying to shut out dogs and to reduce 4wd numbers (and anyone who regularly goes there can attest to the fact that 4wd's are not creating any havoc with dunes, plants etc).

The bottom line is that this Govt did not go and sprout about this plan publicly like it would about an 'achievement' because its unpopular with many responsible 4wders, dog owners, campers, rec' fisherman etc, but they have to been seen to consult. If people down pro-actively write in, just see what will happen next year - and then it will be too late to complain...

    Cheers

The keyholes are just about the only place on the island still worth going to that os still open to four wheel drives.

I gather the mining company has closed the access road to teh north (you know the good one) leaving only the super crappy one south.

I m sck to death of this bloody gtovernment and am convnced they are trying to drive as much of this green crap through before the next election in a desperate attempt to get the green prefreces which they think will keep them in government.

I urge everyone to write to your local member of parliament as well as making a submission by email as per the link.

This **** has to stop somwhere and nobopdy else is going to go in to bat for us - we have to make the effort ourselves !!!

PLEASE get busy writing people - won't take long.

At the very least it will mean instead of paying the Redlands council the $30 something odd dollars for a years beach permit, overnight it will become $130 just like the rest.

Happened on Bribie. Now it is Straddies turn.

Thanks Vlad - hit the nail on the head. I do like Flinders aswell, great place to camp. Mate at Easter I went down Main Beach and swung into an inlet that is a bit hard to spot from the hard. It used to be the creek but you can drive up the creek and it joins up to the northern road near the pipeline. Nice drive. Nicely overgrown track with very very few people there and everyone looking after the place. No litter at all.

I could not agree more about the motives behind the Govt's actions. Can I commend to everyone though when writing to the Govt to avoid accusing them of buying the green vote, but rather to appear conservative and reasoned in their approach - that will make the pollies take more note, if they think that they have not already lost your vote...and that your vote as a reasonable 4wd'er, fisher, camper etc can be bought too...

    Cheers

Oh dear, North Straddie will end up just like Fraser Island!

Sounds like a good thing to me.

Thanks for your support from Canberra Karl. For those of us who responsibly use Stradbroke Island regularly there may be contrary views to yours thanks Christ.
