haha some of these posts make me laugh....:D
clearly some people have no idea of the size of Australia
no idea of what it takes to dig a trench that will flow water....of ANY size
no idea of evaperation
no idea of how the "lie of the land" works
and must have bloody Huge pockets
I dont care whether you believe in God or creation.....but there is a reason mother nature is the way it is. When will man put his ego aside and stop trying to "man handle" it (and never win)....but rather adapt to it and work with it.....alot of peoples mind set are stuck in the 18thcentry europoien way of doing things (with regards to the land and living off it)
Regarding the old Qld'rs....they do have their advantages and disadvangtes....not to many roof's stay on in a true cyclone....trust me 1 3 inch nail at each rafter/roof battern connection point isnt enough....and the old roofing nails have a habbit of de nailing themselves under the harmonics of the sheet due to wind pressure
there are plenty of new Qld'rs being built in the Gold Coast, Beaudesert, brisbane region that dont cost and arm and a leg
Aah! all those nice new Toyotas, complete with all accessories, including dust+water=mud=rust in about 18 months time, warranty?? Ooh no sir, it must have been parked near the sea sir,:(
As stated above:
Let's live like we are in Australia, not NW Europe!!
It would take the equivelant of 20 Panama canals to cover the distance from Townsvill to Parkes. 1920 cost of that project was US$65 000 000.
Current value would be a minimum of 10 times that:
Current data is only available till 2009. In 2009, the relative worth of $65,000,000.00 from 1920 is:
$696,000,000.00 using the Consumer Price Index
$554,000,000.00 using the GDP deflator
$1,620,000,000.00 using the value of consumer bundle
$2,380,000,000.00 using the unskilled wage
$3,150,000,000.00 using the Production Worker Compensation
$3,590,000,000.00 using the nominal GDP per capita
$10,400,000,000.00 using the relative share of GDP
From here: Measuring Worth - Measures of worth, inflation rates, saving calculator, relative value, worth of a dollar, worth of a pound, purchasing power, gold prices, GDP, history of wages, average wage
Let me do the sums for you:
$13 000 000 000 Just for the Ditch, Then add bridges for all the Rail Road local access etc etc (probably the same $$ again) Then add a roof to prevent massive evaporation losses!!!
Then add the usual cost blowouts X2, X4 for something this size/ long time to construct.
oh, and then you need to find the Machinery/ labour force just waiting around for the largest construction job in history to be used ; ))
Does this make the picture clearer?
Isn't it just better to Reduce, reuse, recycle?? The two supply/ waste pipe system is eligent simplicity not to mention 2-3 orders of magnitude cheaper : )
Dave.
Damn right Serg.
Some people seem to think you can just lay a bit of guttering from Bunnings and the water will find its way where it needs to be !
Disco44 - damn right too.
Probably 9 in 10 of all teh tradiesI;ve ever dealth with havea firm opinion they wouldn;t buy / build a new house (chippies excepted).
New houses - bhloody pine frames = termit
Only 1 in 5 new homes with tiled roofs have sarking installed. Ought to be compulsory.
etc etc etc
Luckily for those who can't spell, there are those who can and in addition, they can also engineer water to travel to where ever it needs to be.
When performing historical calculations of major projects, remember we have technology, something they did not back in the day.
As far as "new" buildings not being up to scratch with "old" Qlders, I know which one will stand up to a cyclone.
Oh and sarking is not to displace water, it is merely for deflecting heat.
ok so now your roof will just pull of the original roof batterns that are only fixed with one nail, unless your roofer screwed them down with battern screws, which doesnt happen all the time....even then the rafters are only fixed with 2, 3 inch nails each end....
whilst Qld's still stand they do so by being helped along the ways over the years....they also hide the problems alot better...ie VJ walls dont show movement like plasterboard does....but that doesnt mean its not there...
like any structure, cut its legs off and they are useless.....how many original Qld's still on their original stumps...
like I say they have their advantages and disadvantages....
Im capable of building any style of building...I wouldnt chose a Qld style....
its not the pine that is the problem....at the end of the day Termites will eat ANYTHING!!!
its the mechanical barriers and construction methods used by some...this has been addressed in recent years and its quite easy to make homes alot more resistant to termites....but you cant stop owners from doing stupid things and also NEVER MAINTAINING their homes.....
If I had my way roof tiles would be banned full stop! nothing good about them IMO..
Sarking was originally used for steel roofs because of the condensation that forms on the underside, due to temp differences....making it reflective has a small but good effect on heat... IMO all roofs should have insulation bats in the ceiling and sarking at the roof tile/sheet...sarking blanket is widely used but to me its trapping the hottest air in...also all roofs should be VENTILATED
Gables, dutch gables should be banned
Zero eaves/soffits should be banned
8 foot ceilings should be banned
Insulation batts should be mandatory in walls and ceilings
rain water tanks should be mandatory...
all roofs/soffits/eaves should be ventilated
