    flood waters queensland

with all the flooding that has been going on year in and year out why cant that water be diverted in land instead of letting it go out to sea . my understanding is that lake eyre is 2 meters below sea level and how hard would it be to cut chanells to get the water to the murray river up qld way its a shame all that water is wasted by going back out to the ocean, as australia becomes more populated water will be needed ??

    1. There are already plenty of westwards channels. Like the Cooper creek. Any idea how much flooding it takes to get water to flow that far? It's thousands of channel km across usually parched terrain, except this year. They don't want any more west of the ranges, thanks.
    2. Putting water in lake Eyre doesn't solve anything. There's so much salt lying around there's no chance of reusing water that has flowed into the lake. As for the myth that water in the lake will generate rainfall etc. it didn't happen after the 1974 floods, or any other one either. The Timor Sea is what produces rain in the north, and that depends on sea temperature in any given year.
    3. The water isn't really wasted, its part of the great hydrological cycle of moving silt and nutrients around. It's what happened before white man came and though he was master of the universe.

They did over here channelling water from the Kimberley down to Perth. There were a number of different designs put forward to be assessed.
The Premier here still has it in the back of his policy book to bring up again at a later date but the longer they leave it, the more expensive it will become.
But, the real problem is the end cost of the water to the public.
The running and maintenance costs alone over 2000km+ of channel would be astronomical.
The infrastructure investment required may in the short term be better allocated to localized desal plants and other water treatment setups plus reusing what we chuck straight out into the ocean that is essentially perfectly good water, particularly storm water.

    Cheers

    Andrew

Have 2 water pipe come into the house.
1 for as we have now (from the water plant)
1 for unfiltered water or decell plant (eg use in the toilet and yard)

That way we are not flushing good water down the loo as we are now.

    here is a cheap solution,

kill one third of the population (less water usage)
plough their bodies into the paddocks (good fertalizer)
we could start with all the landcruiser owners, then those pesky patrol guys..............
    just a thaught!

Western Queensland is generally not short of drinking water for both humans and stock. Most of the west is within the Great Artesian Basin and there is plenty of bore water. What is in short supply is water for crops and pasture. Now, have a look at the distances and area involved. No matter how much water got channelled at enormous expense through the Great Dividing Range it would just be the proverbial drop in the bucket when spread from Cloncurry to Hungerford and Einasleigh to Birdsville. The cost per megalitre would be staggering and few cockies could afford to take up an allocation.

    Gday All
Attached are 2 pics taken from a mustering chopper of the flooded feed lots of Duaringa Station west of Rocky.1000 head of cattle were moved 10 k's to higher using mainly the chopper and dogs. The station itself is marooned by the Dawson River. The station has lost a estimated $10 million so far in fodder crops and others like corn etc.One hell of a disaster here in Qld over an area now known to be larger then NSW.

Folks, check out the link to the albulm I have just posted. All of these pics were taken by the Duaringa (1hr west of Rockhampton) Ambo and show the rise of the Dawson River at the Capricorn Hwy which is the main highway heading west.

I believe these photos were taken Christmas day and they have been cut off from the rest of the world since. This is the same river that has seen the evacuation of the entire town of Theodore and all that water still needs to travel through Duaringa as it head towards the Fitzroy river in Rockhampton.

That is a freaking lot of water on its own but the flood water affecting Emerald will also flow into the Fitzroy river. This means that Rockhampton and places like Duaringa are going to be cut off for many weeks and even when the water recedes the bridges and roads will probably be impassable.

    Talking floodwaters

looking on the news and internet, alot of newer homes inundated older style highset[much better suited to QLD living surrounded but with dry floors??? Maybe someone forgot to tell the builders, councils etc that we live in a high rainfall, low rainfall, drought, flooding and cyclone prone area. Are we going to hear from the doomsdayers next[global warming] I suppose it is not going to make it drier now but wetter and cause flooding. Nothing to do with a cyclical weather pattern, as for moving water around ----live where it suits you best...
