But, people on pensions would be advised, if recieving a large lump sum "Present" to check what effect it will have on their pensions, Centrelink computers do not discriminate

If you qualify for a payment, claim it.
If you don't really, really need it, then pass it on to your nearest church or charity or whatever so it can do some good for those who are completely stuffed.

In our church we are pooling our payments so some families here who lost everything and are uninsured get a nice and unexpected present. Five or six families can end up giving $15K to someone in this position. To get major financial assistance there is paperwork to fill in and hoops to jump through so $15K dropping anonymously into your bank account makes a huge difference both practically and psychologically.

This is my challenge to those who can claim.
yep heard about this on the radio the other day....top idea i reckon

Good point but I'm not sure how to deal with it. Maybe we should just turn up with a big sack of cash.

I hope such stories will discourage such actions. Her actions are truly appalling. Like looters - some folks can't help themselves. But neither can the brigade here that compare asylum seekers to flood victims etc etc.

If you get back to the ABC some time soon, you might be interested in this old topic...nothing to do with floods, but neither are means tests....

Back to my original suggestion - I am not in any way recommending people try to rort the system to get a handout. Just that those, like myself, who lost a fridge and freezer full of food, and lost work, and all sorts of other relatively minor things during the crisis, claim their entitlement and pass it on to others in much worse circumstances.

The government has decided to carpet bomb the affected areas with handouts and we can help re-distribute the money to those who really need it.

Glad to hear you're all for the funding to be asset/income/means test free then Inc - But I've got no time for dreaming at the moment, I'll leave that to you - I'm working through fixing thousands of dollars worth of damage to my property - working through fighting my insurance company to pay up - working through supporting my flooded neighbours by cleaning up their stuff and feeding them - working through my wife's abject misery at her family losing their farm in Victoria. So forgive me if I'm a little touchy about this.
