I am a sixth generation Australian and can trace my ancestry back to convicts and I reckon Larry Hannigan is a nutter. If you are really proud of the country (and I am sure that is most of us) then I humbly suggest that there are far more important ways to show that pride than to follow in the foot steps of Mr Hannigan.

    Cheers

As I understand it....officially this is correct.

Apparently however both the blue & red background Australian flags were used somewhat interchageably during WW2 but it wasn't until about the mid 1950s that the present flag on the blue background took precendence.

After this time, the flag with the red background was then regarded as the maritime ensign

The blue background flag took precedence from 1953 with the passing of the Commonwealth Flags Act. The Australian Red Ensign then became the official flag to be flown at sea by Australian registered merchant ships.

Interestingly, while the Navy has its White Ensign and the Airforce its Royal Australian Air Force Ensign, the Army has none, but it dose have the ceremonial role of 'protector of the Australian National Flag'.

Ned Kelly came round to see me today, I guess I was dreaming
Dumfounded I couldnt think what to say
I beckoned him in but he shook his head
he said I'm a bit grubby and a bit poorly fed, I'd rather we yarned out the back in the shed
I can leave my boots on that way

Well he took a stiff whisky and laid down his gun
He said, I wont keep you long cause I've got to run
Got to ride to the mountains before night is done
He said, Words got around bout the music you play
You truly believe its the fair dinkum way
That the bush must remain in our spirit to stay
And we must have a flag of our own!

Cause this is Australia and thats where were from
Were not Yankee sidekicks or second class poms,
and tell all the frogs what they can do with their bomb
and we must have a flag of our own.

He said, I learned long ago when I was still young
Like the lizard that spits and sticks out its tongue
Oh the way to get shot is to carry a gun
Theres a new world order, the leaders all shout
and the red white and blues are still marching about
Oh we must have a flag of our own

Cause this is Australia and thats where were from
Were not Yankee sidekicks or second class poms
and tell all the frogs what they can do with their bomb
AND WE MUST HAVE A FLAG OF OUR OWN
.........MUST HAVE A FLAG OF OUR OWN

    ....compliments to John Williamson
