As Wales is part of the union - I wonder why they didn't include the Welsh Flag on the Union Flag - well I guess it does not work to well.
Cheers Baz.

The second link has some interesting stuff.
I like our flag the only problem is the kiwis copied it
I personally have no problem with the Union Flag several other countries and even 1 or 2 US states also have no problems showing where they came from I am not ashamed of my families british (scottish) bacgroud I wont mention the german side![]()
To add to this discussion, when Lieutenant James Cook arrived, the flag he raised on 29 April 1770 at Kurnell, was neither the Union Jack (as we know it today), nor England's St Georg'e Cross. It was what is commonly known as the Queen Anne Jack (correctly called the Second Union Flag of England and Scotland) which is a composite of the crosses of Scotland and England. It looks like this:
Just as an aside, while James Cook was the master of the Endevour, his naval rank at the time was Lieutenant. He didn't become a Captain until 1775.

The Kingdom of Wales was annexed by England under Edward 1st in the 13th Century and hence unfortunately for the Welsh they are not represented on the Union Flag. The first Union flag represented the merger of the kingdoms of Scotland and England under James the first so both flags were combined. The cross of St Andrew was added later when Ireland joined the United Kingdom.
Just to continue this history theme, the Welsh flag is not part of the Union Jack because Wales is a principality not a kingdom. Principalities are ruled by a prince while kingdoms are ruled by a king. Technically, the ruler of Wales is HRH Prince Charles, the current Prince of Wales.
Cheers

I am very interested in the history of our country and flag. But who cares where it came from, why are we scared of our history and where we came from. The flag is now part of our history and does NOT need to have on it every social change in the country, books document detailed changes not flags. IF we get a new territory I would be happy for another point. But changes because the country is now more left, right, middle, richer more caring, none of these things matter to a flag, it is part of the history of the country and I dont see why we should run away from that.
In fact perhaps the union jack was representitive of the UK when we first used it, but now its not, it now represents Australia to Australians. The same symbols on the flag change their meaning to the current generation of Australians. Even if we become a republic we can still keep out flag the same, as it would then represent the current state of affairs.
