    HID or LED

    Hi all,

Not sure if this has been discussed but never found anything so here goes.

I am looking at buying some lights to go on the bull bar, preferably 9" HID's that said I was wondering if any one had expierence with the rigid LED light bars, not sure what size I would need for them to serve as an alternative but if I am going to spend around 1k on lights thought I would check out the options.

Also has anyone bought any of the Plastic type HID lights of Ebay? there are a few there and could get a pair for around 600 so would be a good saving if they are ok.

Do HID ights get hot ? That would be an issue if doing water crossings, LED ones would be seled beams and wouldn;t ge hot.

LED ones (the best ones I've seen easily available here are from EDI-T - see bottom opf this page Tactical Torches
with related link). Evan runs that join and he's avery helpful fella.

These LED lights have good spot but also a very good spill beam which is what you want. Its not the Kanagaroo 2kms up the road you need to worry about, it's the one hiding in the fresh pick alongside the road thats about to jump in front of you.

The otehr BIG advanathe opf LED lights is the lwo currnt dr This would be perfct solution for vehciles with low powered alternators or even, gasp, generators iek series landies.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

I have no personal experience with either of them but what I have read makes the LED's sound very interesting

    Hey patclan,

I have got Hella Rally 4000 HID's ( 2 x pencils) and they are very very good. Easily the best driving lights I have ever owned. I think that they use a 35w bulb , so current draw is low. They do put out some heat but nothing like a halogen bulb, really they do stay very cool.

Never had LED driving lights, but that new LED light bar from snake racing looks the goods. The longest version is about $1200.

I have got a LED tactical torch from "Led Lenser it blow the old MagLight to the weeds.

    Go for the LED's.

I'm in the same boat at the moment and from what I have found the LED bars are my choice. I was looking at the snake racing bars and for $1,200 you would get a nice size bar putting out 11,000 lumes. I'm sure there are other brands out there cheaper if you looked.

I'm looking out mounting mine on the roof, out of the way of water, less current draw less heat seems like the way to go for me.

I put a 40 inch LED bar from Snake racing on my roof rack and it was the biggest which could fit.

HID are great but power wise and spread from the combination LED flood and spot is "outstandingly good" Who can argue or compete with 14,525 Lumens? I looked at another LED brand at Oppersite Lock who fitted my rack and lights. They cost about the same and they are spot or flood only not in the same lumen output ball park.

I will get some video when off road this weekend. HID are good. In my opinion for power consumption, price, longevity and sheer turn night into day Snake racings LED win. that said if your mounting on your bull bar then you cannot put anything like a 40 inch on the bull bar. A good set of HID might beat the smaller LED bar output for your bar. sorry if I am not resloving your question and no- They didn't pay me.

You can get a pair of proper brand-name HID lights from the USA delivered for $900ish at the moment. Personally I would pay the bit extra over the cheapies to get quality if you go down the HID path.

I would love to put one on the roof but I have no roofrack, want one but got to keep it under 2.1m to get into my car park at work, might see if I could get a bar to attach it to that would keep it under the highest point of the reer roof line.

My solution to getting better driving lights was to fit a pair of secondhand Super Oscars, driving light lens, not pencil beams, and add 35W HIDs. Took a very good light (100w lamp) to an fantastic light for under $300. Pair of lights were $100 at cash converters, and HID 35w, 6000k, H1 kit was $200 off ebay. Had them for a number of years now and still very good, compared to modern HID native lights. Would stick with 4300k HIDs next time.
Think about adding HIDs to your existing lights, you will be pleasantly surprised at the improvement. AND when LEDs are affordable, upgrade.
