Spotted travelling through Williamstown SA in September 2007 approx, one tractor was towing a camper trailer. (There were another couple of vintage tractors too, sorry, no pics) Can't remember now where they were travelling to but they had been a fair way.
I remember seeing one on use in the late 80's, while ploughing some rough land (heavy clay) along the Coorong coast. From 1/4 mile away you could see the thing jump with each engine stroke under load. Awesome and never forgotten sound.
When I heard it again at Williamstown I bolted out of the tent at the caravan park and had a quick yarn while the drivers had a breather.
Its quite an interesting procedure to see them started when cold too
an unmistakable sound when under load,, thats for sure!

Thanks for the photos. They bring back memories. Many hours sitting on one working the paddocks in north Canterbury. On cold frosty mornings one could hear them popping away on many farms around the district.
As an aside, is there a small stationary engine, on the same principle that could run on used oil to power a genset cheaply?
to your aside , with thread hi jack apologies, there were....(are?)... a number of gensets manufactured almost purely for Australian rural purposes mostly by Lister, Petter and Southern Cross. Most were low revving single cylinder diesels driving a heavy flywheel belted or coupled to a 32v dynamo or generator for domestic use. They ran on anything and the cockies would run them on anything. I was a remote areas diesel fitter in the NT and worked on many of these. After cyclone Tracy, many of these old things found their way up to Darwin, but werent used and were stored in sheds at Rum Jungle, Batchelor, south of Darwin. Where they are now who knows? Most of these types of generators were upgraded to "high revving" diesels in twin and triple cylinder form to make good 240v at stable frequencies. None of them are portable but the old singles would make a nice project. We did a few up as workshop projects and they were put on display at Darwin River Dam pumping station. Yes they would produce electricity cheaply then but now you can hand carry more efficient generators of the same power.

Im working on that as a side project ATM, a small older air cooled single pot diesel driving a compressor and alternator and about 1.8-2kva with a peak of 2.4. I think I've found one that should be a direct bolt up job for one of the honda alternators, has electric start and seperate 12v 15a alternator (yes a proper one, not just tapping the 240vAC exciter.
