    G'day Garry,

I was talking about the Cat, made the loose connection between the American boat which was beach-able and the Cat that was converted, used in Timor.

I was just wondering if the craft that the white paper mooted would be something that was already available in oz, or weather the whole cat thing was a bit of "all flash, no substance" event?

Currently sitting in Falmouth, having a refit, and is getting twin hangers, which will be a good thing for Australian service.

For an insight on Largs Bay -- Amphibious Ship For Sale, Sold: RFA Largs Bay

read Captain [engineering] Wardell's report, sounds like another lemon.

I agree - as a minimum not quite the bargain we were expecting. This always happens when their is Government interference in ship purchases - in 20years time it will be the Navy's fault that this ship does not do what we wanted - not the politicians who thrust it upon us.

The same happened with Manoora and Kanimbla - the ships that were designed to do the job specifically required for the Navy were $500m each but the Government saw we could get some rusting hulks for a 20th of the price and went for that even though they were not fit for purpose - the end cost was about the same as the cost of the new ships and the new ships would have better suited our needs, still be in service with a lot of years left.

I was working in Force Development (Sea) on the functional development team for the new purpose built ships when the decision was made at political level to cancel the Training Helicopter and Support Ship program and go with the US ships.

If I was posted to Largs Bay, I would secure a copy of the Captains [engineering] report, and place it in a safe place, pending a compensation claim to DVA, over respiratory complaints.[ I have a copy of the report, made in Feb. 2011, disturbing reading, no wonder the Pom's want to get rid of the ship.] Bob.
