If I remember right Bris. to Melb. is 22 hours driving time, add breaks ect.
If you want open plains type terain head up Towomba range and on to Goondawindi befor heading down the Newell Hwy.
If you want more scenic mountains ect. head out to Warwick and then down the New England.
On the Newel Hwy towns are about 1Hour+ apart, on the New England more towns to break it up.
Can't help on road conditions but you try the each state traffics web sites.
My sugestion for you to think about about is making it a 3 day trip.
Come down the New England, not as flat as the Newell but a far more scenic drive.
The major towns have some play grounds you should be able to find easily for the rug rats to run wild on.
The look out on top of the range just north of Tamworth was a regular stop for us.
Stay at Dubbo for 2 nights, we just grabed an onsite van with ensuite(great with kids).
On the second day head to Dubbo Zoo for the day.
Day 3 head to our part of the world.
This is 2 days of @ 11hours broken up by a free day, less grissles from kids this way.
Don't forget the Parks observitory as a stop.
But subject to time(read longer trip) The Warrumbungle NP is worth a detour, particulary if your up for a walk.
And if on the Newel you could look at Mount Kaputar too.
Still havn't tried the baths at Moree but they are on a to do list.
Safe trip, hope to catch up when you get down here
