    Moving to Melbourne

    Well,

We have decided to make the move from Brisbane to Melbourne in the coming few weeks, and seek some advice for those in the know

The decision at this moment is whether we do the trip via Sydney or take the plunge via Dubbo (or the like).

I have not traveled either of these roads to date - EVER!!!

So there are some questions i have pertaining to the trip:

    1) What are the current road conditions on both routes? Road works, road conditions? Points / areas to avoid? Points / areas that are essential to visit?

    2) What is the expected time of travel to get to Sydney or to Dubbo from Brisbane?

    3) Any suggestions of places to stop overnight in Dubbo (Sydney we have accommodation)

    4) Any members in either cities open for a couple of coldies on the weekend of July 9th?

Any tips on the drive, things to be aware of, words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated as im a little nervous about the long drive (especially with 2 young back seat drivers)

    TIA
    Shaun

I prefer the inland route and have done more times that i can count from the time i was 7 or 8 when dad got his first rangie, for the next 15 years or so we travelled up and down that highway almost every school holidays visiting my grandparents where ever they parked their van at the time.

    BNE-MEL

As I hate the coast road my preference is new england hwy to windsor via the putty road , up richmond road to the M7 and down to liverpool thence hauling the hume.
Can be a day trip to Windsor if you have to. Watch Putty road for Skippys cousins together with wally the wombat at night.

Did BNE-Windsor a month ago and the road was good all the way.

    car cricket

    No help with road conditions but travel a lot with three kids. Games are the go for the three and four year old for us. Car Cricket gets a good work out. Its a bit of waffle but he rules go like;
Choose a batter, score one run per car, four runs for say a cool 4wd disco, six for a b double and out is any red car.

The commentry in between runs is what keeps the kids interested think Richie Benaud!!!
I spy and "what animal is that" makes up a few more hours when we call lunch or drinks for the cricket

"what animal is that" is a bit like who am I with a few key atributes given untill someone guesses what the animal is.

We travel best with each of our three seperate out of hand reach- lucky our d3 is a seven seater making this easy as She who must be obeyed occasionaly moves to the back if things get out of hand.

Hope you have some warm clothes mate it is chilly down here in Melbourne

As some of the others mentioned, I would go inland to do this trip, but I have no info where to stay in Dubbo, when I do that run, I'm not carting the kids about, so do it in one hit.

What part of this lovely city will you be moving to?
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

If I remember right Bris. to Melb. is 22 hours driving time, add breaks ect.
If you want open plains type terain head up Towomba range and on to Goondawindi befor heading down the Newell Hwy.
If you want more scenic mountains ect. head out to Warwick and then down the New England.
On the Newel Hwy towns are about 1Hour+ apart, on the New England more towns to break it up.
Can't help on road conditions but you try the each state traffics web sites.

My sugestion for you to think about about is making it a 3 day trip.
Come down the New England, not as flat as the Newell but a far more scenic drive.
The major towns have some play grounds you should be able to find easily for the rug rats to run wild on.
The look out on top of the range just north of Tamworth was a regular stop for us.
Stay at Dubbo for 2 nights, we just grabed an onsite van with ensuite(great with kids).
On the second day head to Dubbo Zoo for the day.
Day 3 head to our part of the world.
This is 2 days of @ 11hours broken up by a free day, less grissles from kids this way.

Don't forget the Parks observitory as a stop.
But subject to time(read longer trip) The Warrumbungle NP is worth a detour, particulary if your up for a walk.
And if on the Newel you could look at Mount Kaputar too.
Still havn't tried the baths at Moree but they are on a to do list.

Safe trip, hope to catch up when you get down here
    Cheers, Kyle

Have travelled the Newell, New England and Pacific to many times to count

Flat out with near to no scenery...good towns though, go the Newell

More hilly, pleasant scenery more towns, go the New England

Very Hilly, lots of coastal views with more towns, go the Pacific

Suggest you head into RACQ and get some maps Our last trip to Melb we chose the little known Black Stump Way...a very pleasing drive little to no traffic and the caravan parks along the way were very affordable

    Hope this is helpfull
