    "Toll proposed for Pacific Highway"

the Newspaper, "Daily News" from Tweed, etc., [ mydailynews.com.au ] has a page 3 article saying that,

"The head of the Federal Government's infrastructure body has proposed putting tolls on the pacific Highway in order to generate much-needed funds for its upkeep."

I thought that was why we payed big taxes on every liter of fuel that we purchase for our Land Rovers.

If they try, there will be some huge blow-ups, as there isn't a decent alternative route. I'll have to go read the paper in the lunch room now.

I agree with John comment but at the same time I pay fuel taxes as well and do not use the Pacific very often, perhaps once every 2 years.
I would like to see my taxes going to the roads in the Wide Bay area specially the Bruce, Isis and the bundy to Gin Gin roads.
I use them and like to see in the future the user pay policy. That would be fair I guess instead of big taxes on the fuel.

i reckon you would use the pacific regularly as the bruce hi-way makes up part the pacific so the federal spoken said on the radio the other

i was listening to 612 abc in brisbane and tolls on the bruce are part of the whole deal....melbourne to cairns = pacific

one thought was the more you use the section of road the amount per trips drops on a sliding scale therefore the tolls you pay on the roads you use the most get return directly to that section of road

i.e. i only go to the sunshine coast twice a year and might have to pay $10/trip however somebody living at the sunshine coast and travelling to brisbane for woork everyday might pay $0.50/trip

either way it will be a brave federal government to introduce......

Well, the continuously increasing number of pensions being paid to our ever ageing population are sucking up govt funds at an alarming rate....faster than the govt can really provide. The only way for our infrastructures/untilities to survive is a user pays system or increased flash for cash units everywhere.I agree with Weeds and somehow we need to be able to enforce our governments at local, state and federal level to use all funding collected for road funding for exactly that purpose not redistributed to other expenditure.

Two problems I see - it will not be instead of existing taxes, but in addition to, and it will require everyone who uses these roads, even once every couple of years, to either have an e-tag at a steady monthly cost, or pay a lot higher toll, as is the case with existing toll roads.

There are no "admin" or steady monthly costs associated with an RTA e-tag.
