So I am in the market for a new vacuume and have always liked kirbys but finally decided to look at them a but more. I currently have a miele plastic one but its not strong enough. So the kirbys are awesome, they have full parts available, all cheap, easy to take to bits, last for ever, made of aluminium, and possibly the best performance on the market.
It would not suprise me if many people here own one for this reason. I am buying the diamond model as it seems to be the best, in LR speak it would be the 1998 disco tdi 300.

Why would you want a Vacuum cleaner that leaks oil?
If they sell them the way they did when I worked for them then don't believe a word the sales man says.
I liked the kirby but we already had a vax. Was the only machine management didn't make fun of at the time.
This was back in the early 90's.
these days there is no need to get the sales guy around, the early 90's kicked off the latest series of kirby but the best ones are about 2004, the diamond model which is the second newest. To buy a kirby simply go to ebay, there are both new, used and remanufactured ones available.
in simplicity and parts they are like a LR but in reliability, power and the fact that they do not leak oil on your carpet they are much more like a G wagen.
We have had a Kirby for about 14 years now and apart from belts has not caused any dramas. Comparing a Vax and a Kirby is not right, they are two completely different units and applications. I had a Vax as well at the same time and the Vax was used more for car detailing and intricate furniture that the Kirby could not do. Vax lasted about 6 years.
I know they used to sell door to door but the service used to be faultless. Up until a few years ago the reps always made yearly contact to see if you needed a service and or parts. That seems to have lapsed a bit and now you have to send it away to them.

I picked up my Kirby 'Heritage' from the roadside.... an hour or two washing the bag, new belt and it was good to go. - Oh yes, bought some paper bags to put inside the fabric one, something the previous owner did'nt bother with...
Has lasted 5 years, and motor only died last week. R.I.P.
Dyson dc23 motorhead, best vacuum we have had. Never had a Kirby or Vax.
X2 for Dyson
Cheers Baz.
