looks Similar to devices that are used by muffler/crash shops to prevent zapping the ecu during welding
So I have two of these laying around.
Bought them at a swap meet I think, they have been sitting in the garage for ages while I decide if they are actually worth fitting or not?

The back of the box says" auto surge prevents voltage from exceeding 18 volts" but im not really sure how. It connects directly between the + & - terminals

so is that one vote for a "maybe" legitamate?
I've been working on cars for 35 years and have yet to "zap" an auto electrical system to death, and that includes by welding. I have one of those "service minders" but I rarely remember to use it these days. Not to say it doesn't happen every day somewhere in the country but I think the risks are over stated. Surge protectors MAY save an ECU or radio but far better is to keep dummies and jumper leads away from your vehicle.
BTW limiting a voltage to 18 volts is easy, you just need a suitable zener diode and a power transistor ($3 plus a pretty case). The only thing is how long the over voltage is applied and will it burn out the limiter anyway.
Two questions are relevant -
Does it do what is claimed? (probably)
Is it necessary? (probably not)

I think I paid $2 each for them so I guess if I put them on it won't hurt, might not actually help much, but it won't do bad things.
Thanks !
