economical auto paint reccomendation
G'day all,
We have an old BMW that one of our daughters uses for uni. (we inherited it) She spun it on the Hume hwy a couple of months ago avioding a concrete block on the road, and wrinkled it somewhat. I bought a donor vehicle to rob panels from, but now we have a piebald car. It's not worth putting a high value paint job onto, and we don't have buckets of money to throw at it. So, are there any reccomendations for an economical way to get it all the same colour, short of the old bloke attacking it with house paint. Thanks.
Don

Do you have a compressor and spray gun?
Is the car mainly one colour?
The cheapest option if you just need to paint 1-3 panels and the paint on the others is reasonable would be to buy a rattle can of matched paint from autobarn. About $35. They can mix it from a paint code or a panel.

Yes I have a spray gun and compressor (8cfm). The original colour is red which is badly faded, so I thought I'd go the whole hog if I can afford it as the whole front as well as the nsf door are currently gold

I made my own '2 pack' by mixing enamel with a hardener. Hell of a lot cheaper than automotive paint. 5L of enamel and 1L of harder cost me $120, not including thinners. You would want to cut it back soonish after spraying, since it sets VERY hard.
Not sure what the forums general consensus is on this, but it worked well for me.

I've brush painted steel structures with penetrol as an additive and achieved a finish similar to a spray coat. I was thinking if i sprayed with a similar brew it might be ok. Perhaps a blend of that, and Veryans hardener
