Thread: Flinders Ranges advice please

The best parts of the Flinders Ranges are the northern parts. The Arkaroola sanctuary and the Gammon Ranges National park top the list for 4WD tracks.

This park includes a track to Lake Frome which is worth doing for a day trip, see brochure.

Lake Eyre South is best visited via Mulloorinna Station where camping is available. To camp in the Northern Parks of SA you may need a Desert Parks Pass.

Last time I was there, I did this drive and loved it.

Arden Hills Self Drive 4WD Track

If you stop and take lots of photos, it takes most of the day. If you do that drive, then it is probably worth camping at Warren Gorge, one of the less well known camp grounds.

There other similar drives.

If you are interested in geology, then Brachina Gorge is fascinating.

My 2 cents worth.

Melbourne to Adeliaide via the Dukes Hwy. A good days drive.
Stay the night somewhere near Adelaide or even up near Tailem Bend.

Go from Adelaide to Hawker via Orroroo, Carrieton, Craddock etc...
Stay at Rawnsley Park. A nice place to stay at to see Wilpena Pound, drive Skytrek and generally do the touristy thing.

Head up through to the Gammon Ranges via Wirrealpa and Chambers Gorge.
Maybe stay at Chambers Gorge, a nice no facilities campsite.
Or continue onto Weetootla Gorge in the Gammon Ranges park itself.

Then head on through to Arkaroola and and stay down along the creekline in the no facilites campground.
Drive a lot of the tracks, including out to Paralana Hot Springs and out to the Wheal Turner Mine.

The head up through Wooltana and Mt Hopeless to the Strezlecki Trak before heading down to Lyndhurst and then up to Marree and out to William Creek to go out to Halligan Bay to see Lake Eyre north.

The up to Oodnadatta and then onto Cadney Park via the Painted Desert at Arckaringa.

And finally back down some blacktop to Glendambo, Pimba, Pt Augusta and eventually back to Melbourne.

I head up this way at least twice a year and just wish it could be more often so I am envious of you a bit.

I suggest melb -> mildura -> renmark -> taylorville , we'll shout you a bed for the night, then 2 options.

1) morgan and then back roads to YUNTA and then on to ARKAROOLA via lake frome..(arkaroola (or beef) road.

2) Morgan -> burra -> peterborough -> wilmington (toy and landy display!)
(wilmington is base of flinders ranges)-> stirling north -> quorn -> hawker ->up to arkaroola etc --suggest call in on Talc alf and then to farina campsite (nice spot!) as going further --consider clayton spa (search here and theres references to it)... have a great trip!

Try no to buy anything from Wilpena Pound store, if you do and ask how much, they reply bend over and show us how much you have in your wallet. Overpriced!
