"Layla" on the stereo suddenly sounds weird, there is an echo in it.
Hang on, phone has Layla as a ring tone.
Pick up the phone while taking a tight left, yell "hang-on" drop the phone and continue to the top of the hill where I pull over.
"Hello"
"Hey dad, I need some help, I'm stuck at a lake near Lithgow"
Now bear in mind the fact that my son and I live in Orange, he knew I was going to the smoke for the weekend but what are the chances of him ringing me just before I got to Lithgow to come and help him near Lithgow ?? Normal rule of thumb would be, when dad hits Lucknow ring for help at Lithgow.
Now the boy has a sense of direction somewhere between his mothers and mine, ie, between "what planet am I on" and I am at the northern exit of the Bathingstoke roundabout. RIP Douglas Adams.
In spite of his best efforts I find him at Lake Lyall.
I approach his fossilised Falcon muttering such things as " just because I own a Land Rover doesn't mean you can take a Falcon bush"
He had driven over open ground between two tracks and dropped the front wheels down over a washout to get onto the other track. It was at this point that all directional movement was lost.
Left rear hard aground but right rear not so hard aground, Phase 3 GTHO's had detroit lockers, AU Falcons...........no.
Snatch strap passed under and back over the rear axle tube, beam axle thankfully, 2 minutes with the winch and Robert's your fathers brother !
I was there for a total of 10mins and said see you later before handing him a "You have been assisted by a member of a 4WD club" card and continuing home.
And yes I do know the rules, if there are no pics it didn't happen. He has some on his phone but will probably never send them to me to let me post them.
It is nice to have the vehicle and equipment to just do what needs to be done without a fuss.
