And I thought TD5 injectors were expensive! Another Petrol in a Diesel story....

A couple of weeks ago I traded in my 90 (TD5) in for more of a town car, a 5 year old Mercedes Diesel 220 CDI. Much easier to get down to town in and altogether more civilised.

Within a few days of taking posession, it was stalling when putting it into gear, first drive of the day.

First trip back to the dealer was new transmission oil and a new filter. A known problem they said - "sealed for life" is not really that at all apparently. Still stalling.

Next trip back to the dealer was for torque converter work. Except that they discovered the fuel had some petrol in it. A mechanic noticed it smelt funny when it was idling!

Anyway - they asked me to sit down for the quote to fix it all, when I went to check on things today. Just under $19,000!! Of which $7800 was for 4 injectors . Also quoted was a new injector pump and 2 new fuel pumps (left & right sides) & etc.

VERY lucky that I got it from a dealer and it looks like it will be covered under their warranty. Lucky that I got it supplied with a full tank of diesel, and I've only done a couple of hundred KMs (so no argument that I filled it myself). First car I've bought from a Dealer in ages, so glad I got a warranty.

Also luckily they've given me a loan car: a BMW 740 iL! Goes like stink but drinks fuel like my old Range Rover 3.9 It is even bigger than my L322 Range Rover. There is SO much room on the back seat it is ridiculous.

Hoping to get it back in another week or so..... it has spent more days at the dealer than it has in my shed so far.

    Cheers
    David

I don't know the SA situation but in Queensland there is a statutory warranty for 30 days (or 3 months on newer vehicles). Even without either a dealer warranty (and don't trust those!) or statutory warranty I would be insisting no out-of-pocket expense as the car was delivered in a condition which was incompatible with the purpose you bought it for (and you no doubt told them you expected to drive it!)

At least this time you won't be doing it yourself...

I know what you mean about injector cost, Golf 2.0 tdi just cost me $1900 for one injector - and people give me crap about running costs of my Landies....

That is outrageous for a Golf! I thought they were economical things to run & repair. Same price as the Mercedes.

That is one of the reasons I do love the old Diesel W123 Mercedes. 5 Injector tips: $300! And easy to change out in the shed with basic hand tools.
