From the article it appears the vehicle she was in was the tow vehicle and was attempting to pull the other vehicle backwards by reversing. Also looks like she was the front seat passenger. Several unfortunate decisions.

There are relatively few uses where a snatch strap should be used in favour of other recovery choices. In the past year I have used a snatch strap to recover someone else only once and have not been recovered by snatching by anyone. Towing and winching are more controllable options (IMO).
The main reason for that is that there are few people I would trust to perform the operation safely.

I was astounded that the police called it a freak accident on the news.
This is far from a freak accident its a known fact that if you continue to do this people will die.
Surely this is negligence maybe there should be greater public awareness of the facts.
We discuss it all the time but what about the people who just go into the 4x4 shop and buy a snatch strap
Fair point but we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves and call for a ban on something that can extremely useful in certain situations. What's most important here is education for the masses on ensuring that people know how to use their recovery equipment in a correct and safe manner.
As tragic as this potentially avoidable accident was, to ban equipment would be detrimental to all extreme pastimes.

Promotion needs to be curtailed.....what rubbish. Snatch straps are perfectly fine...when used correctly.........it's the human component that is the problem.
Based on your premise may as well ban 4WDing.....I mean curtail it. Education is the answer here....not talking of banning a perfectly able piece of equipment for the right circumstances.

Give it a rest Stevo.
You know what I mean. I did not say to ban it and your silly remark that I was suggesting that is, well ....silly.
But to help you out here since obviously the point was too subtle for you. I was referring promotion to the uninitiated of a piece of equipment that is potentially very dangerous when not used correctly.
