    Ideas for a snow holiday?

After being shocked at the price of accommodation in the alpine regions of Vic and NSW, we are now trying to determine if it is possible to play in snow for a reasonable cost. We have no desire to ski, just play in snow for a few days.

Does anyone have any ideas of a quiet little out of the way town where we can take our kids to experience snow and still be able to afford to feed them? We'd rather have solid walls around us but will consider taking the camper trailer down if there is somewhere to camp within an hour or so of the white stuff.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

No where is cheep in any distance from the snow field.....Tom Groggin camp ground is down the bottom of the range on the VIC border, national park so cheap camping..alternative is across the Snowy River is free camping in Vic, no facilities but you can walk across the river to the loo, need gum boots though both are nice spots and not too far from the snow fields and far enough way for it not to snow

    Tumbarumba Lovely little place

About an hour and a quarter from Cabramurra, or an hour and a half from Selwyn snowfields.

If you just want to play in the snow and want to do it on the cheap, then Tassie would probably be the place - Mount Field or Ben Lomond. Can find cheap accommodation near by. Probably a bit late now as we had a lot of rain last week that has probably washed a lot of it away now.

If you actually want to ski, then NZ is hard to beat. The Australian resorts have been doing $1.00 lift passes and such to try to be competitive this season, but they're still pricier!

    awabbit6,

I know what you mean, it's drug money to ski and stay. When we lived in Melbourne the family and friends used to stay in Jamieson ( just outside Mansfield) at the court house hotel which had cheap rooms, cheap food, cold beer and a warm fire and then we would head up the Jamison-Licola rd for the saturday then again on the sunday.

The road would climb up to Mt Skeane which isn't much lower than Mt Buller and if the snow was good you couldn't get mush past that point. We used to hook up old skis and snow boards to ski ropes on the towbar and be towed along behind.

It is fantastic fun and is cheap to boot.

Nothing wrong with Bright Victoria. Stuck in between Mt Hotham and Mt Buffalo. Costs you nothing to go to Mt Buffalo and costs nothing to drive through Mt Hotham to have lunch at the pub at Dinner plain.
