how would a ball ball fit without the pin?

That is agenuine Landrover Series trailer towing hitch for pin & tongue type trailers,not common out here now, but used a lot in UK for agricultural trailers,similar to the pintle hook/lunette type of hitch, it should still be quite legal to use here, but they are a little noisier than the ball and socket type of hitch, but, with a trailer with that type of tongue and pin hitch you would not get your trailer knocked off
If you wish to dispose of it I would be quite interested, if reasonable price.

A ball would be fitted through the top pin hole,with the nut between the jaws.

No worries, from memory they were rated at 4 ton (4000kg) so towing a loaded trailer with an early Series 1 would have been slow

Either that, or I have seen towing balls with extra-long bolts around somewhere, so you have a towball for normal use, and a pin that you can attach a shackle to for towing/recovery with a shackle and strap/rope.Originally Posted by UncleHo

they were rated to 4000Lb.... there is a very specific reason why i know that.... the limiting factor is not the unit itself but the 2 bolts that are supposed to hold it on.
there was a ball and pin available for them so that you only had to have the one pin. ball on the top with a wind up castle nut for the bottom with either a clevis, spit, R pin or bit of fencing wire doubled over depending on what you had on hand.
