Have waited a long time for LR to design a new Defender. I like what I see. Roll on 2015.
Looks like they are no longer concerned with making a working vehicle. As said before, looks a trendy poser car now. Will probably mean they sell more at a higher price.
Would have been nice if they had shown a commercial/utility concept but I doubt they want to target this market anymore. Must be Tata's job now.
Anyone else think it looks like a Nissan Xtrail?
Maybe the concept that they showed yesterday will be under the LR badge and the defender as we know it today will be transfered to Tata, they make the utility vehicle for the world and LR make the pose car for the socer mums?
but then it seems to me that the concept car showed last night is similar to the Freelander?

Yeah its a funky looking Land Rover and would be quite cool.
As a Defender replacement, I'm not so sure.
I wonder what the twin cab, 1 tonne payload, 3.5 tonne tow capacity, ute will look like?
Price, I imagine, will start at $60+grand and keep going until you get a nose bleed.:(
I think as a defender replacement it is right on the button. LR have clearly signaled that they are seeking a "wider buying market" with this. As a replacement it does just that, it completely replaces what we always thought of as a Defender with something else.
They are not interested in selling to farmers and the military anymore (possibly also because they got sick of the yanks making smart alec jokes about snatch wagons).
I think that's easy. There probably won't be one. The DC Sport only has enough storage for "sports gear".
As for tow capacity. hmmm. Maybe that will be relegated to the Disco with the DC100 being marketed as the "lifestyle" vehicle.
I put mine on $78 and up.

Anyone else think people should stop ******* on about this :p
The new vehicle will be excellent, like the D3 / D4 are far more capable than those before them...
Puma's, TD5s and Countys wont gain value or hold it.. They will just age as they continue to do...
I'll put money on it the new finalised version of the replacement for the Defender will be:
- more capable
- more comfortable
- Sealed from dust
- Sealed from water
- Designed for those other than Cornish Miners
Will I still fondly remember my Defender.. Absolutely... Was a great vehicle..
Do I enjoy my Disco 2... Immensely...
Would I jump into a D3 / D4 now... Absolutely...
Will I own the replacement for the Defender if it is capable etc..
Definitely.
Alan,
I think you've been watching too many Land Rover ads.:p
Range Rover and Discovery continued the "tradition" and were therefore worthy of keeping the name. (Although not so sure about the 2wd Evoque being worthy of a RR badge!)
It may be a nice funky new vehicle and I quite like it (still want to see what's under the hood), but it shouldn't be called a Defender, for the reasons we both listed above.;)
I would probably even buy one if I was rich enough, but to me it "appears" to mark a fork in the road.
Happy to stand corrected when they bring out the production model.
IMHO - Of course :D
so long as its properly hosable and designed to be worked on without making access to things a PITA....
