Used to be a Dems Spvr and Minewarfare/BoobyTrap Instr. Last bang was clearing mines in Mozambique. We had to requal every 2-3 yrs. Competencies included handling, supervision, blast calculations and design using both elec & non-elec initiations for cutting steel, concrete etc, cratering, quarry blasting and light ordnance disposal.

Pretty much a standard qual for RAE Offrs. Then, you could go further to specialize and become an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Tech. RAAOC used to specialize in ammo and they become Ammo Tech Offrs. The difference? ATO's worked on concrete floors and Sappers did it in the dirt.

Never bothered to look at what the civvy side has to do. I'd expect the security clearances would go up from a State Police level to the Feds.

What State/Trade authority is it that controls the trade competencies and assessments? Do licences carry across state borders?

UWA don't offer chem eng last I checked. They have process engineering, but it is basically electrical engineering.

Andy, as isuzurover said if he is interested in blasting why not look at mining engineering. I am currently in my 3rd year of mining at UQ on the east coast. I have gone back to studying this semester after having a year and a half off working for Orica in the Queensland mines. I have found mining companies look after students really well.

One of the good things with the mining degree is there is a partnership between the uni's of Australia meaning that you can change location and still get the same qualification.

I'll throw Civil Engineering in there as well if you want to blow stuff up.

I've been doing it for the last 10 months in the city of Brisbane.

Orica is a company you could approach for work expereince but you really need to know someone with Company. (It's not what you know but who you know for what you are asking).

    Regards
    Andrew
