I do agree with you however, even though again i didnt say it, but yes wouldnt it be wonderful if those struggling families had more money? or would you disagree as that'd take some of your supposed $360000 a year!

I picked up on the word "lazy" though. A little harsh, judgemental and disrespectful.
If I rang my plumber, at short notice, and offered him $42 to come and stick his hand down my dunny, he'd laugh.
My point. It's supply and demand. They are casual workers and that works both ways. - They dont have to work, and you dont have to pay them.
Employ them full time, with "stand by" arrangements, super, sick pay, 8 weeks leave and then you may have the right to make judgement. (I bet that'd bring their hourly rate back to about $26.72)
I would imagine, in the average sized school, there would be one teacher unavailable for duty 60 to 80% of the year (ie: 22 teachers x 8 days). Perhaps you could employ one staff member to be on duty as leave relief - full time:angel:

It is quite funny however that as far as i can determine, no one here has ever had to hire/arrange etc relief teachers however everyone seems to be an expert in the whole teaching profession. Hilarious really!
I do love the forum and have learnt heaps however this has really put a spanner in the works for me in that sense.

Barney, I think you need to give out some credit now. Temp/Casual/On Call/On Demand/Top Up labour is not unique to teaching.
The scenario you described is repeated in many fields.
You may also be pleased that your sentiments are repeated in other industries.
Yeah absolutely true sleepy. I suppose my comment should have said experts on the teaching game.
I suppose I'm just still so miffed at the number who apparently feel $300 is below-them when so many people I know would jump at that money regardless of the job to a large extent.

I see your quandry and the position you are in. It is by no means great money for being expected to jump at short notice, but it is what the rate is and has been accepted by the people on the list. However I think it a little harsh to judge casual (very casual) drop of the hat type workers for not being available. If you want people to be available like that you only really have two options to get the loyalty and service you require. Either pay them a retainer to be on call or make the hourly rate worthwhile. To come in at the sort of notice you are describing the rate should be $50-$60 per hour at least. Full time teachers can grizzle all they lik but they have regular income, leave etc.
Look at the rate any tradesman is on now and then look at their after hours call out rates. I am sure most relief teachers would be happy to get half these rates. A good example is up here atm mechanical work of any sort is $135 per hour. Contract rate for us to get an ESO $140 per hr (and no we dont get paid anywhere near that).
You can not expect people who do this sort of work to ensure their lives revolve around you, it just wont happen as you would not centre your world around these people.
What happened to schools alway having 1 or 2 permanent relief teachers that could be utilised in other ways if not directly teaching. Something schools and the government should consider. Would solve the problem.
