London low emission zone 2012, some diesel vehicles banned

    Land Rover monthly, August, 2011. Trying to clean up pollution in London, transport for london will be banning many diesel Land Rovers from their low emissions zonefrom 2012, unless they are fitted with a particulates filter. Londons low emissions zone was created in 2008 as a way of reducing pollution from heavy diesel vehicles driving in the city, and covers most of greater London. Londons air quality has not reached an acceptable standard, so from 3rd Jan. 2012, additional vehicles will subject to the exhaust emissions requirements of the LEZ.Land Rovers affected;

Series 3 ; all 88 @ 109 models with the 2.25 litre diesel or a diesel conversion ,but NOT 88 station wagons

90, 110, @ 127; all models with the 2.25 litre, 2.5 litre or 2.5 litre turbo engines, or with a diesel conversion, but NOT 90 station wagons.

defender ; all models with the 200 tdi , 300 tdi, or td5 engine [up to 2002]or with a diesel conversion, but NOT defender 90 station wagons.
lets hope mr Brown doesn't hear about this Bob

After reading thru the Transport for London web site re the LEZ., I came across these interesting facts.
The LEZ operates 24 hrs / day, every day of the year, charging days go midnight to midnight, so if you enter the zone in a vehicle that doesn't meet the emmissions standards at 11.30 pm, and leave at 1.00 am the next day, you get charged for two days. The LEZ is not the same as the central london congestion charging zone.

How it works: there are no barriers or toll booths in the LEZ. cameras read your number plate and check against the database for registered vehicles. This database is compiled using information from the Driver and Vehicle licensing Agency, the Vehicle Operator Services Agency, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, and drivers and operators who who have directly registered with Transport for London. this tells them automatically whether the vehicle meets the LEZ emmission standards, is exempt, is registered for a discount or if you've already paid the daily charge,
vehicles registered outside Great Britain : If you drive a vehicle registered outside Great Britain, including Northern Ireland, you must register with Transport for London to let them know if it meets the emmissions standards, so they can add the vehicle to their database. If you don't register, and drive in the LEZ, even if the vehicle meets the standards, you'll have to pay the daily charge, or may receive a penalty charge notice. Could be a sign of the future, Bob

Why do you need to drive a Land Rover in central London?
I drive a Land Rover because Smart Cars would be totally useless in the environment that I live in.
And because I couldn't tolerate a soulless white goods appliance

I suppose if you have had as many bombings as London, with as many people killed, it is easy to understand the big brother attitude, but isn't it typical of local council to cash in. Bob

    Cheeky!

The info isn't quite right, it only applies to diesel 'commercial' vehicles, so a 200TDi 90 or 110 station wagon is ok because it is classed as a passenger vehicle, but a 200TDi 90 or 110 3 door isn't because it is classed as a commercial, yet the engine/emmissions are the same!

I think what alot of owners that live inside the zone will either sell their Landy or replace the engine with a V8 petrol as it only affects diesel engined commercials.

Well picked up! I was wondering why D2's with a Td5 aren't affected when all the Deefers are.... except wagons

The information comes from the August edition of Land Rover monthly, and is a feature article by James Taylor. Under" will the new regs. affect you,' he says- ' the owners who should take note of the new reg's. are those who have diesel Land Rovers built between 1973 and 2002, unless these vehicles are classified on the V5C log as cars or estates. [I have no idea what that means] After this he has a list of vehicles affected, as listed by me in the first post.

FWIW., a letter in the news section says- ' Londons controversial tightening up of the low emmissions zone appears to have claimed it's first victim, with the 2012 SLSLRC London to Brighton Land Rover run unable to set off from it's traditional starting point at Crystal Palace. Bob

    G'day Bob10

The term "Estate" is the UK name for a Station Wagon, they used to call them "Shooting Brakes" but the name changed during the 50's , so, in english terms a Holden Wagon would be known as a Holden Estate Car.

The V5c document is the equivalent of the Australian Registration Papers, but in UK when a vehicle is first registered and given plates, these plates stay for the entire life of the vehicle, until such times as it is scrapped, a vehicle over a certain age (3 years from memory) has to have a MOT,(RWC) and is then able to be "Taxed" (Regoed & Insured) before it is able to be driven on the road.

    cheers
