I reported a fire yesterday - turned out to be a fuel reduction burn (which I suspected, but better safe than sorry!) - I think that there is a lot of that going on at the moment, and that will be where the smoke came from.

This might help you John for next time
Hazard Reduction Burns - NSW Rural Fire Service

Although it isn't as helpful as Vic's site which tells you if the burn has actually been lit as planned.

There's often that much political ass covering (at least in Mexico) that to actually light the match takes about three hours of weather reports by which time it's often too late.

It might - but it does not include the one I saw yesterday, possibly because it is being run by National Parks, not RFS!

Cerainly that list goes a long way towards explaining the amount of smoke commented on by the OP. The local ABC radio often broadcasts warnings about these, but again, I suspect they do not get given information from National Parks.

RB42 does not live that far from us and we have had several grass/bush fires in our area over the last week or so, the Pine Forrest has had 2 large blazes, so that would contribute to the large amount of smoke in the area

I hope they're not so backward that they don't share such information, they claim on the above link...

"The following hazard reduction burns are planned by NSW land managers (such as National Parks and Wildlife Service, Forests NSW, Crown Lands and Local Government Authorities) and fire agencies (NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire & Rescue NSW) over coming days, weather permitting."

Went for a drive/ walk to Somerset lookout@ Mt Mee. We hoofed in the 6 kliks to the lookout to see........................Nuffin but blue/ grey clouds.
We'd passed a few un/ partly controlled burns on Sth of woodford into Neurum Ck Resort the day before. Obviously not the only ones in the region.

    Seen:
Silver D2 with roof pod at NCBR- waves
Gold p38 at Somerset lookout (driving with Challenger on 20"+ rims!)- waves

I suspect National Parks may well change their plans at the last minute depending on the weather, particularly before the fire season. And in any case, the relation between RFS and National Parks in this area at least, has not always been free of problems.

All NSW hazard reductions are supposed to be entered into a database that ultimately populates the NSWRFS website.

Current Incidents in NSW - NSW Rural Fire Service

All agencies are 'signatories' to the bush fire coordinating policy that enables this process. Hazard reductions are a recent addition though so there's probably going to be a few discrepancies at first.
